I don’t see it in the tags but I am calling some mythical aspect now. Lots of water things mentioned in the first chapter so maybe mermaids? But mom is also weird about daughter growing up and people keep being drawn to their looks so maybe sirens? I hope I can laugh about being completely off base later.
