Almost a hundred pages in, it feels like hard work. Some of the sentence construction is awkward and difficult. But I found the author's second novel to be amazing, so here's hoping this one is as good!

By this, I mean that the protagonist is deliberately made to be boring, to all other characters and to the reader. Yet some mystery, not strong, motivates a commitment to the tedium...
