There's an interesting take on sea travel/mariner lore that sets the Gentlemen Bastards' world apart from us: sea travel is believed to be doomed unless there are women (who also make better officers) and/or cats. The possibility that, somewhere in the seas of these novels, there's a crazy old cat lady captaining her own vessel fills me with glee.
