" What can be said at all can be said clearly, and what we cannot talk about we must pass over in silence. "

Listening to someone explain philosophy without experiencing it yourself is like watching a cooking show and expecting to taste the deliciousness through the screen. You can hear all the recipes, but until you actually step into the kitchen, chop some metaphysical onions, is a long way

" At heart we are animals, Russel. By day I was corresponding with Frege on logic, but at night, during the Brusilov Offensive, with the Russian artillery barrages exploding around me, I found myself driven toward ontological inquiry " .

So far, 1:0 in Wittgenstein vs Russel match, in language's war. It is true that language can both illuminate and confound our thoughts. Consider, for instance, the indescribable sensation of love. How can mere words encapsulate the profound emotions that stir within us ? Mm ? Hey, don't roll your eyes ! Language, as remarkable as it may be, seems futile in capturing the essence of such primal human experiences.

Now I know what Houellebecq was trying to say in his " Atomised ". But Bertrand Russel's " logical atomism "- that sought to analyze language into basic atomic units of meaning - has nothing to do with the sperm particles leaked in Houellebecq's logbook. Wittgenstein could still draw a parallel, but refrains. Why ?

Helga So if we have something to say, but can't say it, it is encouraged to shut up and let it go?

Théo d'Or It is in the context of Wittgenstein's saying/showing distinction. He believed that the limits of what can be said point to the importance of what can only be shown. In some cases, the aspects of our experience are better understood through direct observation rather than through attempting to capture them explicitly in language. How could I say.. Imagine someone trying to describe the taste of a mille-feuille, to a friend who has never tried before. To you. By me. I could use words like " delicious", " savory", or whatever. But no matter how skilfull the description, it still falls short of truly capturing the essence of the taste. Until you take a bite and experience the flavor of it, you'II not have a clear thought, words alone couldn't adequately express the taste. I know, you already salivated.. Désolé...

So the book is saying we should try to experience what we don't know or we should keep silent and let it go?

Théo d'Or Not directly. Whether or not we choose to experience what we don't know should be a personal decision, but it depends on our comfort levels.. But it is worth considering, and right now I recall Huxley's book, " The Door of Perception " , where there is an insightful approach of exploring what we don't know, through psyhedelics.

I haven't read that book. We can also experience many things by reading.

Théo d'Or Oooo, you could say this twice. Only that the lived experience will be directly proportional to the quality of the reading.

I agree!

Théo d'Or Hitler's " Mein Kampf ", for example, might give you a rather experience, but not necessarilly useless. It's good to know the evil, in order to deepen the good as much as possible.

Théo d'Or * rather unpleasant *

message 10: by Helga (new)

Helga The evil or more like the bullshit made important by a bunch of idiot patriots

message 11: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or Hahaha ! Patriotic idiots never die. But the main factors were propaganda and manipulation. These two took the idiocy to unimaginable heights..

message 12: by Helga (new)

Helga It is always like that. Misinformation plays a big role.

message 13: by Théo d'Or (new) - added it

Théo d'Or Yes. Disinformation include all these - propaganda, manipulation,
media control, cult of personality, but especially psychological manipulation. All possible ways were used. And the result was as such.

Un mille-feuille traditionnel sera composé de trois couches de pâte feuilletée alternées avec deux couches de crème pâtissière.
