Not only is this quote cringe as hell, but it's a consistent problem I'm seeing within this book and most books nowadays. I saw someone call it a "tell not show" thing in books and that's exactly right.

You know what, props to Rebecca Yarros because Dain is probably the most layered and complex character in this book but that does say something very negative about the rest of her characters
