The unwritten Rule 0 of this all is to be at least competent at chess yourself, which I can confidently say I am not.

This guy moves fast once his proper lessons begin. Before this it's all been setting expectations, now we're cracking through sample plays, tactics, and strategies. Feel like I'm drinking from the fire hose but my play vs. online bots has improved considerably.

Thing One found a new hyperfixation and it's one we could well lean into, so I dusted off the board, we added letter and number stickers, went over how the pieces move, and then I got stuck... I'd like to avoid the 'just keep beating them over and over til they get it' method that was used on me growing up. I'd like to keep things fun. Here's hoping!

Jason Pierce That doesn't mean you can't be a good teacher. Right after I taught my 7-year-old nephew how to play, he beat me, so apparently I was an excellent teacher even if I suck at chess.

Virginia The right way to teach chess to kids is to enroll them in a beginner course with Coach Carlis on Outschool and then sign him up for his weekly chess club via Outschool. There are professional chess teachers out there who connect well with kids. My son has been in online chess club for over two years.

This guy says otherwise. I think it's meant to avoid a blind-leading-the-blind situation, because if I don't know the difference between good play and bad play (I don't!) then we both may end up reinforcing bad habits.

There's a thought that never occurred to me. Had he been playing at all before starting online?

Virginia No. We enrolled him in a four week (four hours) Beginning Chess class on Outschool with Coach Carlos, specifically designed for kids. Then he started attending Coach Carlos’ chess club (30 minutes) every week also on Outschool. He loves it and can now play competitively with his dad and older school friends.

Jonathan K (Max Outlier) If you're a chess fan, I'd recommend the movie, Searching for Bobby Fisher, that stars Joe Montange, William Macy, Delroy Lindo and an unknown child actor as Josh..Absolutely terrific too

This is encouraging stuff! My kid and I are both at the "know what each piece does, don't know strategy" level and I'd need to progress a lot if I hope to teach anything. Small puzzles and a philosophy of "keep it fun" for 10-15 minute stretches is what we've begun with around the house.

I am not a chess fan (yet), more a chess-curious bystander -- but I do love William H Macy!
