Reread “Enemies” last night. Damn. Crazy how it violates one of my cardinal rules of short story writing (do NOT explain/summarize the themes for the reader) & can still be one of the greatest things I’ve ever read. Carriage ride scene is gorgeous & effective - Chekhov can wring some beautiful scenes from transit. It occurred to me this is just the evil version of “A Small Good Thing.”
