The 1974 Japanese cartoon adaptation of Heidi was carefully researched - two cartoonists scouted locations in eastern Switzerland & too pictures of nature & houses. The early landscapes of Ferdinand Holder were used as a resource. However the religious aspect of the original was dropped & a at.Bernard dog added.

The author says that in Germany there is such a thing as "Bullerbu-syndrome" desire or belief in an ideal society as exemplified in Astrid Lindgren's books about the Bullerby children. It strikes me that several of he books described in this volume similarly depict ideal, rural societies, e.g. the Little house books & Heidi.

In 2019 a Dutch journalist wrote than 97% of Japanese people know all of the characters in the Moomins, which makes me wonder (a) about the other 3%, & (b) about the popularity of these translated books in Japan, we saw that Heidi & Beatrix Potter were also very popular in Japan, (b2),are there no equivalent Japanese books?

Discussing the role of Laura Ingalls' daughter Rose Lane in writing the 'Little House...' books, this described as 'Rose was likely a true collaborator at most or an aggressive editor at least', in Rose's own diary 10th may '36 she wrote' have to finish my mother's goddam juvenile' 😂

In the forward to a 1997 translation of Huckleberry Finn in to Dutch, the translators revealed that they considered giving Huck an Amsterdam accent and Jim a Limburg accent to try and preserve the speech differences between the two that are in the original, but decided against it. #translation challenges ?

In a continuation from the 1930s written by Charles Tritten, Heidi et ses enfants, there a political element - Heidi as an adult woman takes in refugees during WWI, demonstrating a 20th century version of Swiss values.

All the adaptations of Heidi, it's argued, drop the original context in favour of presenting Heidi as a symbol of cheerful, healthy, outdoors life.

Heidi leert er onder de bezielende invloed van Klara's grootmoeder lezen en bidden, twee zaken die grootvader voor haar niet nodig had gevonden.
