This is not going well for many reasons, but the easiest to explain is the hero's weird detachment from reality. He keeps telling her there's no shame in being his mistress, in giving him sexual pleasure and he's all baffled at her wailing. Dude, are you not living in 1835? Is this not a remote Cumberland town? Why are you acting as if her being a fallen women wouldn't ostracize her? What. is. happening?
