I am reading too many books at a time right now. Bad me. I need to stop that. I like to focus on 2 books at once. Max. I picked this up for some reason and I'm enjoying it but it is not a Harlequin or even a romance novel. It's literary fiction and not a quick read. Enjoying it, but can only do so much of it at once. Loved the movie.

The Rome interlude gets to be somewhat tedious after a while.

Re-reading this. It's been too long since I put it down. It's an amazing book and I'm glad I've started over. Appreciate it more.

My puppy escaped from her crate and rampaged through the house and ate my copy of this book. Will have to buy another one to finish the last 20 pages or so. I don't know if that means she liked the story or not, but she certainly found it tasty.

There is a lingering sadness with this book that stays with me.

Power reading through this so I can finish it and move on. I like it, but I think the more compact, less drawn out movie adaption is better.

The writing is lovely but at some point you just want the characters to get on with it and consummate their love. Lots of navel gazing. Will be glad to be done with this.

Oh, I remember reading this one a few years ago and just not. Feeling it. Hope it'll be different for you!

Maybe I should have taken a classes in music theory, philosophy and esoteric classic literature before tackling it. It moves VERY SLOWLY and that's probably why I haven't touched it in a few weeks.
The Rome part is a bit long and almost unnecessary, I would say, but the writing is exquisite! I liked the book so much more than the film.

I think this is a book that needs to be read more than once to truly appreciate.
Yeah, unfortunately, I find that that's a problem most times I see the adaptation before reading the book... 🙁I think you're right about re-reading, but for me it's one to preferably swallow in one sitting... There are books I struggle getting back into properly if I put them down, even for a night, and for me, this one is one of them. The writing is so darn good it keeps layering the emotions in an almost perfect sequence. Breaking the sequence, for me at least, almost always breaks the spell...

I agree with your statements 100%. This is definitely one of those books that it's better to clear the day and just read. You really have to sink into it and get into the flow of his writing. Once I do that, I really have a difficult time putting it down. I am reading it in large chunks of time now--an hour or two at once instead of 20 min. It's not a put-down-pick-up-later book. I'd like to spend the day reading the whole book (I'd like to spend my days reading most books from cover to cover) but unfortunately, I have to do non-literary stuff!
