Jane Lebak writes about angels, smart women, and angels who have to put up with smart women. Her stories are a random assortment of genres, both fiction and nonfiction, long form and short form. Some of it is pretty weird. One editor told her, "You think so far outside the box, I'm not sure you know there is a box."

Boxes are for cereal. Fiction wants to be free.

Jane lives in the Swamp and spends her time either writing books or ejecting stink bugs from the house. She is pretty sure no one reads these author bios.

As a kid, I was used to sitting at the table with my extended relations for hours after dinner, with all my family members talking and trading stories.

One night, my mother's aunt or great-aunt shared a story about a friend of hers who was on vacation in England and saw a news anchor who looked and sounded exactly like her daughter...and she'd always sworn she'd given birth to twins. (This was in the era of women getting knocked out for birth.) She said she vaguely remembered giving birth to two babies, but when she awakened in recovery, they said she had only one baby.

Of course, this was way before the time of the internet (if I heard the story in the 1980s, then it must have taken place in the 1960s or 1970s) so my great-great aunt's friend was never able to get any answers or find out who that news anchor was.

Years later, I thought about that story again, and I decided it needed an answer--so I wrote it!(less)

In a couple months, they'll start trying to come indoors again, too.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your granddaughter. :-( It's just so hard for everyone, but I think for grandparents it's such a specific loss because you're not only grieving for your grandbaby, but you're also grieving for your child's pain. Thank you for your kind words, and I hope you'll find peace and consolation in your own journey.(less)

Well, first let me back up a bit. Today is a book birthday for a book, but it’s also the would-be 17th birthday of my daughter, Emily Rose. For anyone who hasn’t been around the blog forever, Emily was my second baby, and she died of anencephaly when she was two hours old.

We had a chance to visit her grave last week, and the cemetery is just the way

One of the things that keeps surprising me about this series is how often Isora takes a character I despise and turns her into someone I...like. It's amazing, and I'm appreciating it a lot. I wish I could do that.

Anyhow, the plot thickens, and I'm r

“After a tragedy, I would categorize four stages of creativity. The creator: is able to record the details of the event; emotion may or may not be present creates for catharsis; an emotion-dump, primarily for himself or herself, and the details may or may not be present creates evangelistically because there’s a Message. E.g., “These were the stupid things people said when Emily died, so you the reader should not say them.” (Note that this is outwardly directed, but because it’s angry writing, it’s still primarily for oneself) creates and lets the artwork tell itself without pushing a Message”

“I have serious reservations about the whole Rapture theology,”

“I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo.
"So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

“God what an outfield,' he says. 'What a left field.' He looks up at me, and I look down at him. 'This must be heaven,' he says.

'No. It's Iowa,' I reply automatically. But then I feel the night rubbing softly against my face like cherry blossoms; look at the sleeping girl-child in my arms, her small hand curled around one of my fingers; think of the fierce warmth of the woman waiting for me in the house; inhale the fresh-cut grass small that seems locked in the air like permanent incense; and listen to the drone of the crowd, as below me Shoeless Joe Jackson tenses, watching the angle of the distant bat for a clue as to where the ball will be hit.

'I think you're right, Joe,' I say, but softly enough not to disturb his concentration.”
W.P. Kinsella, Shoeless Joe

“But if there is no cosmic Plan? What a mockery, to live in exile when no one sent you there. Exile from a place, moreover, that does not exist.”
Umberto Eco, Foucault’s Pendulum

“We'll have to see," Belbo said. He rummaged in his drawer and took out some sheets of paper. "Potio-section..." He looked at me, saw my bewilderment. "Potio-section, as everybody knows, of course, is the art of slicing soup. No, no," he said to Diotallevi. "It's not the department, it's a subject, like Mechanical Avunculogratulation or Pylocatabasis. They all under the same heading of Tetrapyloctomy."

"What's tetra...?" I asked.

"The art of splitting hairs four ways. This is the department of useless techniques. Mechanical Avunculogratulation, for example, is how to build machines for greeting uncles. We're not sure, though, if Pylocatabasis belongs, since it's the art of being saved by a hair. Somehow that doesn't seem completely useless."

"All right, gentlemen," I said, "I give up. What are you two talking about?"

"Well, Diotallevi and I are planning a reform in higher education. A School of Comparative Irrelevance, where useless or impossible courses are given. The school's main is to turn out scholars capable of endlessly increasing the number of unnecessary subjects.”
Umberto Eco, Foucault’s Pendulum

“We were interrupted by a girl with a strawberry birthmark on her nose; she had some papers in her hand and asked if we had signed the petition for the imprisoned Argentinean comrades. Belbo signed without reading it. "They're even worse of than I am," he said to Diotallevi, who was regarding him with a bemused expression. "He can't sign," Belbo said to the girl. "He belongs to a small Indian sect that forbids its members to write their own names. Many of them are in jail because of government persecution." The girl looked sympathetically at Diotallevi and passed the petition to me.

"And who are they?" I asked.

"What do you mean, who are they? Argentinean comrades."

"But what group do they belong to?"

"The Tacuarus, I think."

"The Tacuarus are fascists," I said. As if I knew one group from the other.

"Fascist pig," the girl hissed at me. She left.”
Umberto Eco, Foucault’s Pendulum
