I try to find ways to invite my inner Muse (the associative and subconscious parts of my mind) to the writing process by thinking about a problem or situation and then doing something else that does not require focused attention. Great alternatives include taking a walk or using the rowing machine. Ideas tend to start flowing when I step away from the desk for a while.(less)

That was the question I kept asking myself as I noted, and wrote about, business models shifting to subscriptions. In technology companies, more business revenues now come from recurring sources (renewals, subscriptions). Cloud software is a case in point. But marketing practices remain focused primarily on lead generation and lead nurturing. But not everywhere. Creative businesses find ways to extend marketing to existing customers. So I wrote the book I felt was missing - how marketing remains relevant and strategic when more revenues come from existing customers.(less)

Ray Bradbury’s word association game

hand writing in notebook with title The Word Association Game

In his book Zen in the Art of Writing, Ray Bradbury describes the process he used to write a whole mess of short stories:

In my early career I floundered into a word-association process in which I simply got out of bed each morning, walked to my desk, and put down any word or series of words that happened along in my head. I would then take arms against the word, or for it, and bring on an a

“Attention and focus are essential skills for writers in a noise-filled world.”
Anne H. Janzer, The Writer's Process: Getting Your Brain in Gear

“Other benefits: As a company Adobe struggled for many years with people using pirated copies of its software, particularly for costly Creative Cloud applications like Photoshop. The subscription model automatically reduces piracy, since the company no longer ships packaged software that can be copied. Further, organizations on tight budgets with single projects can pay to use the service for only a month or two.”
Anne H. Janzer, Subscription Marketing: Strategies for Nurturing Customers in a World of Churn

“Guy Kawasaki sums up this dichotomy nicely: “There are two kinds of people: eaters and bakers. Eaters think the world is a zero-sum game: what someone else eats, they cannot eat. Bakers do not believe that the world is a zero-sum game because they can bake more and bigger pies. Everyone can eat more. People trust bakers and not eaters.”
Anne H. Janzer, The Writer's Process: Getting Your Brain in Gear

“We see our customers as invited guests to a party, and we are the hosts. It’s our job every day to make every important aspect of the customer experience a little bit better.”
Jeff Bezos

“Everything that needs to be said has already been said. But since no one was listening, everything must be said again.”
André Gide

“But seriously, isn’t it enough to have just one, maybe two superpowers, and then just be okay with being okay at everything else?”
