Not what I expected
Eager is a disappointment to this reader. The writing was troubling and it was neither a scientific review or a journalist's coverage of a very large topic about the largest rodent in North America. In several areas of the book the writing seemed to be more interested in writing witty journalism rather than dealing with the facts of wildlife management.
Eager was a very poor choice for a title of this tome. I was disappointed by the Introduction by Dan Flores.
I found very little of this book I could identify with.
I was very glad that I waited to get a copy from the local public library than to wait for a Good reads give away or to spend hard earned cash to buy this book.

Like this Series of Mysteries
It seems a good time to express my favorable impressions of works by Tony Hillerman and his daughter Anne Hillerman. I have been a fan of Tony's books about the Navajo Tribal Police in the characters of Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chee and all his inventory of great characters for many years now. I especially enjoyed a Thief of Time, Hunting for Badger, Skinwalkers, and Listening Woman.
His first novel was The Blessing Way. This effort was followed by many others that identified with the culture of the Navajo and other Nations in the Three Corners country of Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico. I cannot offer enough encouragement for you readers to delve into the beautiful writing of this author to experience the awesome desert environment of this area and the very rich culture of the Native Nations that have lived here for centuries.
Anne Hillerman has continued in her fathers' path of mysteries series with Song of the Cougar, Rock with Wings, Cave of Bones and several more at the time of this writing. In her books she still deals with crimes to be solved by Chee and Leaphorn with the help of Bernie Manuelito who was introduced in some of Tony's books as a rookie Navajo Tribal Officer, she becomes more of the main character as the series progresses.
Anne stresses the conflicts of the Navajo and Pueblo cultures in the modern world and the issues of an officer of the Navajo Nation in addressing the issues of current generation gaps and how the Navajo people deal with all these changes.
This is a great series of novels and it seems to improve with each book. Please join me in reading and enjoying the works of Tony and Anne Hillerman, I know you will be glad you did.

TP
Hard to believe that the title is an important topic of conversation in this day and age. However, along this line, I have made a decision to horde Toilet Paper. My moto will be buy it when you can!!
Just imagine what a great advantage this will be for the forest industries to provide support for their efforts in the Good Ol USA.
In the past we just bought TP as needed but now we have a duty to our country and the TP suppliers to buy as much TP as the stores will allow.
It is GREAT to be an Anerican !! Wear your mask and wash your hands.

50 degrees
Today is heading in the right direction. Not noon yet and the temp is over 50 degrees in Cheney, WA, Supposed to get over 60 by friday. This will give us a chance to garden and get our chickens out in the yard. We are in the process of competing a hen tractor but it will be several months before we can count on egg production.
Of course, we only have 4 chicks at this point. Photos to follow when they get a little bigger.
The trees are leafing out and some flowers are in bloom in sheltered spots. The fishing season is closed here for awhile until we can get past this virus pandemic. Your friend, Gerald Hickman

at the gun show
This weekend I am representing the First Hunt Foundation at the Lewis Clark Traders gun show in Lewiston. The people are very generous and either buying a book, a raffle ticket or making a donation to help US in our efforts to teach young people in learning the proper way to hunt. FHF volunteers take young hunters on their first hunt at no cost and give them a chance to smell the country air and see the scenery and wildlife and learn about our natural resources upfront and personal.
When the young shooter is able to harvest their game we send them a certificate (suitable for framing).
So, I am here to get tell the public about our cadrie of volunteers and the good work we do to help a landowner who is having a wildlife damage problem on their property. Our young hunters can find one of us volunteers to help them hunt for deer, turkey, elk, upland birds or waterfowl. We take the young shooters out to the rifle or shotgun range and provide all the ammunition for free. They especially enjoy our efforts FHF provides a free lunch and snacks.

The book "Scablands" is your chance to walk a historical, scientific and cultural path through this area of Idaho, Washington and Oregon with the author and my family. Photos lavishly show the reader many aspects of the unique Geological area which is mostly in Eastern Washington with features like Palouse Falls, Scabland lakes and the pre-historic and current wildlife residents of such an area.
The full name of the area is "The Channeled Scablands" created in olden times by the repeated floods that rushed out of Ice Age Lake Missoula over the centuries. I hope you will enjoy reading my book as much as I am enjoying bringing it to my favorite readers.
