A beautiful novel from an indigenous lens. This work is truly a gift to bear witness Native American struggle, history and power.

I love her writing! The characters lived in my head and I couldn’t wait to get back to them. Now sadly I finished the book…I’ll have to read all of Angie Cruz’s work now!

Jean Rhys
“All of writing is a huge lake. There are great rivers that feed the lake, like Tolstoy or Dostoyevsky. And then there are mere trickles, like Jean Rhys. All that matters is feeding the lake. I don't matter. The lake matters. You must keep feeding the lake.”
Jean Rhys

Jean Rhys
“I would never be part of anything. I would never really belong anywhere, and I knew it, and all my life would be the same, trying to belong, and failing. Always something would go wrong. I am a stranger and I always will be, and after all I didn’t really care.”
Jean Rhys, Smile Please: An Unfinished Autobiography

Richard Wright
“I was leaving the South
to fling myself into the unknown . . .
I was taking a part of the South
to transplant in alien soil,
to see if it could grow differently,
if it could drink of new and cool rains,
bend in strange winds,
respond to the warmth of other suns
and, perhaps, to bloom”
Richard Wright

“Stop acting so small. You are the universe in ecstatic motion.”

Margaret Wilkerson Sexton
“Now, hate,” she started, “ain’t no use in hate, Josie. Ain’t no use in hate,” she repeated. “Whatever you trying to get away from, hate just binds you to it. You find, even when you think you found a way out, God will bring it back to you, slap you right in the face with it. Where you thought it had gone missing. So don’t ever say hate.”
Margaret Wilkerson Sexton, The Revisioners
