It's not the magic that might be good or bad, but the use that it's put to, and there are certainly lots of shades of grey. Playing with that expectation is a lot of what's fun about this system. It could be really easy to assume that, say, Shadow and Fracture are inherently negative Elements. But how great -- how necessary -- is the shade from a tree on a hot summer's day? And sometimes the act of breaking is necessary to figure something out or to fix it. Conversely, it can be easy to assume that Light is good, but as some damn fools found out during the eclipse, stare at too much of it, and you'll go blind. Any Element can be helpful or harmful, depending on how it's used and to what purpose.(less)
Cass Morris I have one sister! She’s six years younger than me, so it’s a larger gap and a different relationship dynamic than Aula and Latona have.

“No, you move.”

I’m going to be doing some vacation recaps and reviews, but before I do that, I want to address the elephant-sized mouse in the room.

I had an absolutely fabulous time at Disney World, celebrating my fortieth birthday — but it was definitely a weird time to be there. The Kimmel cancellation happened about a day and a half before my trip, and was then reversed about a day before it ended. As such, t

“I find I am increasingly disinterested in what other people will allow me.”
Cass Morris, From Unseen Fire

“All my life,' she thought, 'someone has been telling me what I must not do. Mother, father, husband, priestesses... How did it take me till now to realize how heartily sick of it I am?”
Cass Morris, From Unseen Fire

“The world was full of broken things. Promises. Dreams. Plans.”
Cass Morris, Give Way to Night

Topics Mentioning This Author

“The men in the room suddenly realized that they did not want to know her better. She was beautiful, but she was beautiful in the way a forest fire was beautiful: something to be admired from a distance, not up close.

And she held her sword, and she smiled like a knife.”
Terry Pratchett, Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

“Let no one think of me that I am humble or weak or passive; let them understand I am of a different kind: dangerous to my enemies, loyal to my friends. To such a life glory belongs.”
Euripides, Medea and Other Plays

“If you are a monster, stand up.
If you are a monster, a trickster, a fiend,
If you’ve built a steam-powered wishing machine
If you have a secret, a dark past, a scheme,
If you kidnap maidens or dabble in dreams
Come stand by me.

If you have been broken, stand up.
If you have been broken, abandoned, alone
If you have been starving, a creature of bone
If you live in a tower, a dungeon, a throne
If you weep for wanting, to be held, to be known,
Come stand by me.

If you are a savage, stand up.
If you are a witch, a dark queen, a black knight,
If you are a mummer, a pixie, a sprite,
If you are a pirate, a tomcat, a wright,
If you swear by the moon and you fight the hard fight,
Come stand by me.

If you are a devil, stand up.
If you are a villain, a madman, a beast,
If you are a strowler, a prowler, a priest,
If you are a dragon come sit at our feast,
For we all have stripes, and we all have horns,
We all have scales, tails, manes, claws and thorns
And here in the dark is where new worlds are born.
Come stand by me.”
Catherynne M. Valente

“She dreamed of deep soul connections and passionate kisses and daring escapades. She was certain that he simply had to meet her, just once, and he would feel the same way. It would be like those epic love affairs that exploded into existence and burned white hot for all eternity. The type of love that time and distance and even death couldn’t separate.”
Marissa Meyer, Cress

“What is magic?

Then there is the witches' explanation, which comes in two forms, depending on the age of the witch. Older witches hardly put words to it at all, but may suspect in their hearts that the universe really doesn't know what the hell is going on and consists of a zillion trillion billion possibilities, and could become any one of them if a trained mind rigid with quantum certainty was inserted into the crack and twisted; that, if you really had to make someone's hat explode, all you needed to do was twist into that universe where a large number of hat molecules all decide at the same time to bounce off in different directions.

Younger witches, on the other hand, talk about it all the time and believe it involves crystals, mystic forces, and dancing about without yer drawers on.

Everyone may be right, all at the same time. That's the thing about quantum.”
Terry Pratchett, Lords and Ladies
