David F. Farris was that kid who spent all of his birthday money on Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon cards. They started his love of storytelling. He’d create his own Pokemon, draw them, give them a biography, physical measurements, attacks, etc. As he grew older—into a bigger kid—he began to draw cartoons through the same process, except in more detail this time. He even drew a block-by-block detailed map of an imaginary city across eight sheets of graph paper. He’d dabble in writing short stories because of his love of Harry Potter, but his specialty was drawing.

Creative writing didn’t become a strong passion until 12th grade, when he wrote a mock epic; The Pokemon Master … Surprise, surprise. But still, he elected to attend Emory University in hopes

I then translate those words into a different language (which language depends on the character or kingdom), then usually combine two to three of those words (dropping letters I don't want) to form a name.

I have an entire Word Document that lists each character and describes what combination of words make up their name and which language it's translated from.

Even titles (such as Jestivan, Branian, Bozani, Gefal, Pogu, etc.) are named using the same method.

Then there are more straightforward names in the nomenclature. For example, the Adren Kingdom or Adrenergy (Adrenaline). The Cyn Kingdom or Cynergy (Cynical).

Phesaw - F.E.S.A.W. or Fire, Electricity, Speed, Ancients, Wind.
Ipsas - I.P.S.A.S. or Ice, Psychic, Strength, Ancients, Supernatural

There are a lot of clues in the names of characters, places, things, and ideas.

Short answer to your question:

Knowing who my characters are, what their goals are, and how they're perceived by the world is what guides my decision on their name.(less)

The Jestivan is now on Audible!

I said March 29th. Someone else had other plans.

Not sure why or how, but Amazon released The Jestivan on Audible a few days ago. The bad news is that this means the release isn’t aligned with the other platforms, which are still set for the original date. The Jestivan isn’t exclusive to audible. It will be on 37 other platforms, the most noteworthy being iTunes, Spotify, BAM!, Kobo, Chirp, and Goo

“It’s truly amazing how she can manage to make us smile at a time like this,” Himitsu said. “The directors were right. The first lesson they tried to teach us was that each of us was important in our own special way.” Bryson glanced at the tent. “She’s the one who never needed that lesson in the first place.”
David F. Farris, The Jestivan

“We know that from time to time, there arise among human beings, people who seem to exude love as naturally as the sun gives out heat.”
Alan W. Watts
