Former British CID Detective with the Avon and Somerset Constabulary turned crime fiction writer, James D Mortain brings compelling action and gritty authenticity to his writing through years of police experience.

He began writing in 2012, following a chance encounter in a Bath bar with SAS veteran, TV personality and author, Chris Ryan. Resolve one problem at a time, don't try to fix everything at once.

I'm lucky, I live near the ocean, and when my brain is fried with a myriad of thought processes banging into one another and getting nowhere, I take myself away to the beach, or sit at a viewpoint watching the waves. I also find that many of my creative blockages are resolved when I least expect them; driving, day job, walking the dog, sitting on the throne!
I make sure that I have a means recording those golden nuggets, because they are often quickly forgotten. (less)

A chance to thank the man who unwittingly changed my life!

Six years ago, late one Saturday night, I got chatting to a chap sitting next to me in a Bath bar. At the time, I’d recently given up my job as detective in the police force and relocated to the coast with my wife and eight-month-old daughter. This night was intended as a catch-up with my old colleagues and a way to stifle the pangs of homesickness I’d been struggling with. It turned out to be the Read more of this blog post »
