After graduating from Manhattan College and Fordham University School of Law, I practiced in New York for thirty-five years. Although I write about criminal law, I never practiced criminal law. My area of practice was civil litigation.
In 2005 I retired and in 2010 moved with my wife Rose to South Carolina. Freed from the daily grind of an active law practice, I once again became an avid reader. That lead to my writing stories, which I did strictly for my own enjoyment and shared only with my wife. Richie is the New York City detective who has helped Jake in the past and now finds himself in need of Jake's help when he is charged with murdering the madam of a Chinatown brothel.

Do we define it simply as the absence of death? And conversely, if we define death do we simultaneously define life? I wanted to examine the practical implications of those questions and the best way for me to do that was in a legal setting.
In doing so, I learned is there is a fine line between life and death which is not always apparent. How we, as a society, define, that line has vast social, moral and legal implications. While doctors, lawyers, theologians, and philosophers may never agree on a definition of death, there may come a time in our lives when we have to decide the issue for ourselves.
