Felicity Radcliffe is the author of the Grand Union series. She divides her time between a small English village, where she lives with her husband and dog, and a narrowboat on England's beautiful canal network, which forms the backdrop to her novels.

Here's what Felicity has to say about the Grand Union series:

"It comprises three novels: Union Clues, Broken Lock and Grand Stand. Whilst boating features prominently, I did not want to write traditional canal-based novels, where the protagonists travel from A to B and have a bunch of adventures along the way. I have tried to do something genuinely different and, judging by the reviews, many readers really appreciate that.

At the heart of the series lies a very unusual crime, which sets off a tra

When we had a long document to write - a report or a proposal, for instance - we would first create a structure and then use it to break the task down into manageable chunks which we would tackle individually. I do the same with my books, spending lots of time at the outset creating a structure and progressively breaking it down into chapters, sections and scenes, so it's not too daunting. I then focus on each scene in turn and feel a real sense of achievement when I have completed it. As the saying goes:

"How do you eat an elephant? Answer - one bite at a time!"

Also, I remember that sometimes it flows and sometimes it doesn't. That's completely normal for everyone, so I try not to beat myself up over it.

For decades I produced business reports for a huge variety of different clients, which was great, but now it's lovely to be able to please myself and invent whatever characters and plots I feel inspired to explore. This freedom can feel overwhelming at times, but I try not to get too daunted by it.(less)

Safe Landing and #MeToo

I recently wrote a short story called Safe Landing, which is set in a Fleet Street newsroom on a momentous day in 1969. It is based on a supposedly true story that was doing the rounds among journalists back then.

I don't want to spoil the plot, but let's just say that editors could still take a pretty creative approach to the news in those days, long before Photoshop was invented!
