| I found it difficult to connect with this book. Perhaps I didn't delve deep enough into the subtext to pick up on the 'gripping allegory' the 'biting parable of Eastern and Western Europe today.' I did like the short sentences and simplistic writing ...more | |

| I rarely read books back-to-back by the same author but after discovering Amor Towles that's exactly what I did. First it was "Lincoln Highway" followed by this beautiful book. On the surface it's a simple story about a Count forced to live out his l ...more | |

| Sometimes I like to read books that nobody thinks I would read. This was one of them. The author did a good job at interjecting some genuine creepyness (I know, it's not a real word, but you know what I mean.) Right about the time was enjoying the cr ...more | |

| I loved reading every page of this book. Amor Towles is more than just an intelligent writer, he's a gifted humanitarian, and top notch storyteller as well. There are layers upon layers, in this seemingly simple story that continue to boggle my mind. ...more | |

“Danny’s anticipating an abnormally intense growth spurt, one that will land him on the cover of medical journals. He’s not the biggest or the fastest but he plays with the most heart, will and aggression. He finds his way into practically every play. He plays both offense and defense. He’s the only player with long brown hair streaming out the back of his helmet. Padded up in gear exaggerates his build. He’s muscular and already has the physique of a man. After practice, Danny takes off his helmet and is immediately surrounded by cheerleaders. Suddenly he’s mashing mouths with one of them, leaving me stunned—and jealous. I know I shouldn’t compare but consider the facts; Danny is confident. I live in a constant state of self-doubt.”

Having been fortunate enough to read Tom's memoir beginning to end, I urge everyone to enjoy his amazing story. Tom has taken an unspeakable tragedy and laid it out in such a way that you can still digest it... and even chuckle through the sorrow. Tom's life, full of horrifying tragedy and uproarious humor, is unbelievable. The outstanding way he shares it makes it not only believable, but authentic and stirring. He unfolds his tales with enough vivid detail that you feel like you're there, yet they don't take eons to unfold. To everyone who loves peering into others' lives through their stories, please come peer into Tom's life by reading his book.
