What a rollercoaster.

First, I just want to take a moment to appreciate the way Bennett writes animal companions. Tony and Weather are perfect even though neither of them are your typical pet (despite Weather being a bit more typical than Tony). I esp What a rollercoaster.

First, I just want to take a moment to appreciate the way Bennett writes animal companions. Tony and Weather are perfect even though neither of them are your typical pet (despite Weather being a bit more typical than Tony). I especially love Weather's 3-in-one deal. Who would think to write a Cerberus as a big friendly puppy?

Next, I want to examine the relationship between Wally and Bez and how adorable it is. Bez is sometimes a bit of a jerk, but it's so clear that he really loves Wally. The places that pulled the most at my heartstrings were when Bez showed vulnerability, when it flashbacked to his past in Beelzebub's Hell realm, or when either of them were frantic to save/protect the other. Their relationship is complex, and I enjoy that. Bez tries to blame their connection for his own feelings sometimes when he allows himself to be vulnerable (way too much false bravado, but it's understandable given his past), and Wally gets stuck in his own head far too often, but they balance each other which is what good couples do. Bez's impulsivity and cynicism balance Wally's naivety and tendency to overthink. Wally's compassion and analytical mind balance Bez's ferocity and tendency to act out.

Third, I love, love, love Kell. She's mischievous, snarky, badass, and does what she wants. Also love that her witch's hat is basically the Tardis of hats. It's great to see what she's like because it gives you an idea why Mora decided to bond with her. I love that Mora's character is expanded on a bit in this book and you get to see how much she helped Bez when he was first getting a footing in the mortal realm.

Now let's talk about villains, because this book has some doozies. The first villain gets taken care of pretty quickly, which is good for building tension. Then there are some red herring moments, such as when Wally meets Weather, but I love that the actual villain was kind of a twist (Bennett does have a knack for those) but at the same time, no one could predict the way it turned out. The villain causes some chaos, is way too OP sometimes, and almost kills everyone. Basically, everything you could want in a villain. Bonus that he's not even trying to be evil, but the protagonists are just getting in the way of his own idea of virtue. I love when villains have motivation other than just a grab for power and status or a need to satiate some lust for pain and suffering.

Worldbuilding in this book was mainly about Diabolics, Fae, and Baron Novus' house, which is the setting for almost the whole book. There was a bit of additional monster lore, the knowledge of which helped Wally out of some tricky situations, but not much more about the collective other than to imply that they had basically decided to steer clear of Wally and Bez for the time being.

Like the previous book, this book's spicy scenes get very spicy. Like five chili peppers spicy. I love that there are additional dynamics added to the scenes as their emotional bond grows. Everything about the scenes makes me love them as a couple. There are a lot of sex jokes (mainly from Bez) that help ease the tension sometimes after emotional scenes, but they never seem forced in.

Final thoughts. If you loved the first book, this is an excellent sequel, and you should definitely check it out. The development of Wally and Bez's relationship is worth another book, one to explore this new Wally that we find introduced at the end of this one, but I fear the implications of what conflict another story would bring. I don't want my boys to lose the happiness they've found or have it threatened again. ...more

The book was very good. Well written and an interesting take on the original story. I liked seeing from the viewpoint of one of the witches, but I would have preferred to have gotten them all. I didn't enjoy the romance element (although that was also well written and delivered in much the same way many other romance sub-plots are) partly because the witch was so much more interesting outside of the male gaze. I hated every aspect of him wanting to protect her, lusting after her, and what it led to. I think the story might have been slightly better if Beolin and Aisa had formed a comradery and comforted each other as friends without getting tangled up in lust or anything of the sort. I didn't mind that Aisa was young and beautiful, I found this to be a refreshing change of pace from the original source where all the witches are ugly.

I read this book over the course of several months, so I may be misremembering, but I could have sworn that Aisa claimed that Fate always must have three, and so I was expecting two new witches to greet her when she finally returned home, perhaps to act like they'd always been there. The most heartrending moment of the whole story was the deaths of Aisa's sisters. I wondered why she began to forget them for a moment, I thought there was going to be more to this, like perhaps that fate had called their replacements or something and that's why they had begun to fade from her mind. I would not have liked them to have been resurrected though, as I hate it when authors break my heart killing someone off and then bring them back.

One highlight of the story was Aisa learning to ride a horse. I found this adorable. I liked Aisa as a character, hated Baolin with a passion, didn't feel strongly about the villain (possibly because being familiar with the source material I already knew the outcome of his story and how far he would go to achieve it) was only slightly interested in the difference between Catherine as she's described in this story, and the Lady Macbeth as she exists in the play, and the only other characters I really liked were the other witches and a few of the horses.

It feels well researched, or at least well enough that I couldn't spot the historical inaccuracies if there were any with the way they dressed and what the ladies used for make-up or the way they traveled and fought. Anyway. I enjoyed the book overall, and if you like Macbeth or historical romances with morally grey characters then you should check it out. ...more

As ever the relationship between Dorian and Milo does not disappoint, and the kids are fun and interesting too. I loved the ways in which this story differs from the one it reminds me of. It's like having a better version of that story. I loved Dorian's expanding ability to follow Milo throughout the day, and without a constant worry over his student's safety, this book allowed us a better glimpse of the everyday Dorian.
One of the little side things I love about this story in particular is the cats: Carlie and Charlie who not only have distinct personalities, but they also allow us to see a different side of Dorian than we see when he is with Milo, alone with his thoughts, or trying to guide his homeroom coven. They're also just really fun characters in their own right.
This book expands on the characters introduced in the first story and adds a few more. It also delves a bit deeper into what happened to Finn and why it left such a lasting scar on Dorian and even Milo (which we don't really find out until this book).
The mythologies of this world: demonic essence, wisps, fiends, demons and finally devils are delicately woven into the plot and the more you learn, the more interesting it becomes. It's this whole system of its own. I loved the idea of Tara needing support tools to help control her magic overlap and how angry Dorian became at the knowledge she wouldn't be able to use them in the showcase. The whole spring showcase arc to this story was amazing, as was how it wove into the greater overarching plot.

In the first book, Dorian had to let go of Finn (the past) to accept Milo (the future) and this story has him coming to grips with a newfound expansion of his powers and the feelings of suddenly being in the public eye where previously he had been able to live a quiet unassuming existence. It also deals with him trying to keep from getting too invested in Milo's work as he faces danger regularly, and the feelings of guilt that come with knowing he can't really help or protect Milo, as well as the all-consuming feeling of his own personality melding with Milo's and navigating that relationship. Near the start of the story, Dorian makes the decision to kiss Milo at a very public event in front of spectators in order to show Milo he doesn't want to hide their relationship despite his personal need for privacy and anonymity. It is a selfless act, and one Dorian immediately regrets when every eye in the city seems trained on him the next day and every thought he overhears is prying into his personal business. Despite having access to the surface thoughts of everyone in his immediate vicinity (not the blessing you'd think), Dorian has never had this kind of notoriety before. Milo, who is used to being in the public eye, tells him it will blow over, and it does...it doesn't stop people from constantly trying to use his position to gain favors from the famous Enchanter Evergreen, though.
I loved this new step in Dorian's journey. I loved seeing a different side to Milo, and I adored the two of them together. I also loved the journeys of the various kids, Kento and Caleb are my personal favorites and I want to see them resolve their past and be friends again. Loved how the showcase highlighted Kento's strategic mind since his dark and angry thoughts melded with Dorian's mood well and drew Dorian to them.
Can't wait to see what comes next for this world and the wonderful characters Bennet has created in it.

*added note, as someone who struggles with imposter syndrome, Caleb's struggle to prove himself as belonging in an industry that doesn't want to acknowledge him really hits home for me, but all the characters who struggle with feelings of inadequacy: Dorian, Tara, Caleb, Carson. I love that these books don't try to shy away from showing the reality of struggling with mental health issues. ...more
