Plunged into the Roaring Twenties for the Arkham Horror titles Mask of Silver and its sequels The Deadly Grimoire and The Bootlegger's Dance. A new sequence begins with The Nightmare Quest of April May and The Arcane Gamble of Harvey Waltersin 2025. I've written novels set in the Forgotten Realms, City of the Dead and Crypt of the Moaning Diamond, as well as several short stories and novella Cold Steel and Secrets set in this Dungeons & Dragons world. When not battling cosmic horrors, animated skeletons, and other supernatural foes, I'm authoring tales of Cobalt City, a place of superheroes, super villains, and regular joes just trying to get by. A new expanded edition of Wrecker of Engines and related short stories was issued in 2024.

This sounds super simple, but you do have to do your research. Start in your favorite section of the library or local bookstore. What books do you automatically pull off the shelf and start reading? Turn to the copyright page and figure out who published those titles. Look up their websites and see what they say about submissions. If it is "you have to have an agent," then start looking for agents who sell to that publisher. All that information is discoverable online. Ask questions in writer conferences, hang out with other writers, and take advantage of the professional associations like SFWA or MWA. Every published writer has done this hunt toward publication, everyone has had a "first book" that they've sold, and everyone takes a slightly different route toward making that goal. But if you have found some specific publishers that you'd like to work with, you'll be well on your way.(less)

Gothic: It's a Vibe, Not a Plot

The delightful folks at Flights of Foundry allowed me to muse on the recent surge of Gothic fantasies, mysteries, and romances in the 2020s. I started this discussion at Norwescon in April. There I proposed that it was as much the mid-20th century Gothic romance paperback boom as 18th and 19th century gothic literature craze fueling so many intriguing new books. You can read more about that panel
