Sharon's first book "Not Our Baby" was published in 1984 by Detselig Enterprises (now Temerin Books). She had four children and returned to university when her youngest daughter began grade one. Because her first child, a son, died of a brain tumour weeks before his second birthday, she wanted to work in cancer research. She obtained a degree in Cell, Microbial and Molecular Biology (CMMB) and worked in research for seventeen years.

Now retired, Sharon writes fun and educational math and science books for children. She has published five books and is now an award-winning author. She won Pinnacle Book awards for"The Caterpillar That Learned to Fly" and "11X Magic" and a "Book Excellence Finalist award for "11X Magic".

Various ways.

When my baby boy, Jeffery, was diagnosed with a brain tumour I felt a need to inform other parents of what to expect and the pitfalls to avoid.

When I was doing an undergraduate science degree, Botany and Zoology were requirements. I was floored by all the amazing things I was learning. It instilled in me a life-long love of nature and I wondered why I had never been introduced to any of this in childhood. Yet my children had no interest in nature books that I tried to introduce them to. Their response was "boring Mom!" So, I decided that I wanted to write nature books in a story format as a way to make learning fun. My math books are whimsical and set to rhyme. And I have been fortunate to have found Roberto Gonzalez who has done beautiful graphic illustrations for these books.(less)

I have been fascinated with math all of my life and without it we would not have computers, airplanes, cell phones, TV and numerous other devices that have become a regular part of our lives. It is essential for the next generation to have competent math skills. But, because so many children fear or hate math, I want them to see that often learning it can be fun and even magical. So, I've looked for patterns in math that can help young children learn concepts in a fun way.(less)

Book Excellence Finalist Award for 11X Magic

Recently, I received some exciting news. I won a Book Excellence Finalist award for "11X Magic". This is quite an honour and is a validation of the concept behind this book. It indicates that writing these science-based children's books might be a worthwhile endeavour.

“In everything you do, strive to be the best you can be. But don't beat yourself up if you fall short of your own high standards. It is better to aim for the stars and get to the moon, than to aim for the moon and reach the top of Everest.”
