If you find something as a reader that you like add it to your arsenal. If you discover anything that turns you off as a reader, don't use it. Now that you've decided what you like and don't - write, write, and write. You don't have to have the same writing style as others - you can make it your own. (less)

Useless Etymology: Offbeat Word Origins for Curious Minds by Jess Zafarris Introduction: Today, October 9, 2025, is the official launch day of Useless Etymology: Offbeat Word Origins for Curious Minds by Jess Zafarris. I'm voluntarily reading this book courtesy of NetGalley, as initially received from John Murray Press | Chambers.

Parental Note: This book is not intended for young readers. That said, I'd call it 90-95% clean. I suggest reading it before sharing it wi

“Ms. Ellie Bockert Augsburger, owner of Creative Digital Studios, did a most excellent job. I feel compelled to mention that she had great ideas for Storm Warning. When asked to switch, she did so with ease, for this and many other reasons, I highly recommend her. In addition to cover art, she does graphic designs for businesses. She did a silhouette of an eagle similar to the one on Call Sign: Wrecking Crew (Wings of Eagles) for our business logo.”

“How financially secure do you feel? Thomas Paine has been quoted as saying, ‘Truth never envelops itself in mystery, and the mystery in which it is at any time enveloped is the work of its antagonist, and never of itself.’
Do you know who said this: ‘Distrust and caution are the parents of security?’
The Cattlemen’s Hall is ominously quiet. So Sydney says, “It was Benjamin Franklin. I think our Founding Fathers must have had some of the Holy Spirit in them. I can think of no other reason why they could be so aware of events in their future, unless of course, it was because they were so aware of their past. In their view of history they saw the corruption of the governments they left behind. They hoped for a better future. This can be evidenced by the fact that Thomas Paine stated in The American Crisis, No. 1, December 19, 1776, ‘If there must be trouble, let it be in my day that my child may have peace.”
David McKoy Lynn Hallbrooks

“Mac knocks on the door. After he updates Spider, he asks, “Do you have your weapon with you?”

“Yes, it’s like my American Express card. I never leave home without it.” Mac hears Spider lock and load the weapon. Reassured that Spider is going to be all right, he walks out the front door.”
David McKoy & Lynn Hallbrooks, Storm Warning

“Deb shoots Deano a hard look and grits her teeth so hard she snaps the end of her cigar which flies out the window.

Mac orders, “Deb, stop!”

Deb says, “It’s just a scratch. I’ll worry about it later.”
David McKoy, Storm Warning

“Medical school had been a time for imaginary diseases and Martin had contracted almost all of them.”
Robin Cook, Brain

“If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it's a duck!”
Robin Cook, Crisis
