Hi Horst, Happy New Year!
The Ambassadors is one of those books I feel I should read but don't want to, so I was very happy to read your review and to thereby be released from that particular duty.

The library only has The Burning Plain so I'll start with that. (less)

The Time Machine

In these dark times, our best solution may be a time machine. This luxurious machine from the 1960 film, The Time Machine, is a promising candidate in being able to fluidly move forward and backward in time while watching the world change before one’s very eyes. Although it cannot move spatially on its own, it seems to have some sort of gravitational attraction to the very ground on which it sits

“Did you know that between the two of us, we have free will if and only if I do what you want, and you do what I want.”
Marcia E. Letaw

“What is that which cannot be contained by volume, for it has neither height, nor breadth, nor length, nor width? It constantly weighs on us, but its weight cannot be determined. It is a liquid, but it's viscosity is ever changing. Although we measure it, it cannot be measured.”
Marcia E. Letaw, Raskolnikov's Disorder: A Eutopian Murder Mystery

“None that speak of me know me, and when they do speak, they slander me; those who know me keep silent and in their silence do not defend me; thus, all speak ill of me until they meet me, but when they meet me they find rest, and they bring me salvation, for I never rest.”
Javier Marías, Tomorrow in the Battle Think on Me

“When man spoke his first word he became the thread that quivers eternally between evil and goodness, Heaven and Hell.”
Jón Kalman Stefánsson, The Heart of Man

“Each one of us has within him a whole world of things, each man of us his own special world. And how can we ever come to an understanding if I put in the words I utter the sense and value of things as I see them; while you who listen to me must inevitably translate them according to the conception of things each one of you has within himself. We think we understand each other, but we never really do.”
Pirandello, Luigi

“In prison there's no bad, everything's worse. Worse bellyache, worse misery, worse sadness--the worst of the worst. Jailers and judges seem like people without reason, deranged. Compliance with rules and regulations which have nothing to do with reality turns them into madmen, at least they seem such to those not under the strange influence of the law.”
Miguel Ángel Asturias, Men of Maize: The Modernist Epic of the Guatemalan Indians

“However life treats you, as time goes by you always get the feeling you've lost life in the very living of it.”
Miguel Ángel Asturias, Men of Maize: The Modernist Epic of the Guatemalan Indians

Marcia Letaw Writing reviews isn't easy. Those who really put an effort into it, you for example, really deserve thanks. It's a gift which I have come to value. Thanks for being my friend, Glenn.

message 2: by Glenn

Glenn Russell Thanks for the friend request, Marcia and thanks for the kind words regarding my review of Brodie's Report by Borges. I've been writing reviews for going on 4 years now and it took me time to create my own voice and style in writing reviews of short stories. Now that I've hit upon what really works for me, I plan to review many short stories using this format.

Marcia Letaw To all my new friends and fellow book lovers, thank you for making me feel welcome in the universe that is Goodreads. For years, I despaired that reading was a thing of the past, that opening doors in the mind through the experience of reading had been left behind by an increasingly technological world that was also leaving its human creators behind; yes, I despaired until I walked through the door of Goodreads and entered a paradise! Thank you again and may all of you have a new year that fulfills your dreams.
