Emily Tomko's radical encounter with the Lord while at a nightclub changed her life forever and inspired her first novel. Her tastes tend toward vintage and she's a Germanophile, having spent a year in Bremen and Nuremberg. Emily loves the scriptures and writes with fierce compassion and a deep desire to see people freed from the miry clay of this world and walking in the truth. ...more

The best part about it is that the ideas themselves come from the Creator of all things, and it's something fun and purposeful and stimulating that we get to do together. Just like with physical conception, and indeed with the creation of the universe, in the very beginning little is visible and what is there has no form. And then suddenly, the work begins to take shape, and features start emerging. And then there's the point in which the writing has indeed taken on a life of its own, and you feel that while you had a hand in the initial act, you're now kind of just along for the ride. What will these characters do next? What are they thinking? How will they react to the variables that are coming into their world? And these little "children" that you've given birth to in print will outlive you for generations, and be their own legacy and inheritance, hopefully to inspire and delight others long after you're gone.(less)

Not merely the usual Christmas romance, this incorporated a kind of country versus urban tug between the protagonists, and along with that the pull the past has on us and its implications to shape our future.

It was a ton of fun and kept me in the holiday spirit past New Year's!(less)

A community transformed through prayer

How do you truly transform your trouble-laden community? Is it outreach? Evangelism? Activism? Discipleship programs? Our small but growing community is rich with discipleship programs in town for marriages and for young people, counseling services of various kinds, a clothing and food bank. But it is persistent daily prayer that is the centrifuge of all of it.

Emily liked a quote

“Winston had disliked her from the very first moment of seeing her. He knew the reason. It was because of the atmosphere of hockey−fields and cold baths and community hikes and general clean−mindedness which she managed to carry about with her. He disliked nearly all women, and especially the young and pretty ones. It was always the women, and above all the young ones, who were the most bigoted adherents of the Party, the swallowers of slogans, the amateur spies and nosers−out of unorthodoxy.”

One of those books that lingers in your thoughts for many days after you finish the last page. I found myself looking up the original Time Magazine spread from the 1950s on the lives of the missionaries and the photos taken from N

“I was so tired of this ceaseless, day-to-day tug-of-war between my hormones and my head, my vanity and my virtue. I felt very much as though I were caught in the middle of some dreadful battle in which taking a side of my own would mean certain misery in either case.”
Emily Tomko

“I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve (or save) the world and a desire to enjoy (or savor) the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.”
E. B. White

“9p.m. My flat. Feel very strange and empty. Is all very well thinking everything is going to be different when you come back but then it is all the same. Suppose I have to make it different. But what am I going to do with my life?
I know. Will eat some cheese.”
Helen Fielding, Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason

“It seems to me people tend to forget that we are to love our enemies, not to satisfy some standard of righteousness but because God their Father loves them.”
Marilynne Robinson, Gilead

“Love is holy because it is like grace--the worthiness of its object is never really what matters.”
Marilynne Robinson, Gilead

“I was so tired of this ceaseless, day-to-day tug-of-war between my hormones and my head, my vanity and my virtue. I felt very much as though I were caught in the middle of some dreadful battle in which taking a side of my own would mean certain misery in either case.”
