I have lived most of my life in Kent, England but I’ve also lived in New Zealand and central Africa. Both had a lasting influence. Africa dragged my love of writing to the surface. Living some forty miles from the nearest tarmac road and seventy from anything pretending to be a bookshop, I soon ran out of bedtime stories for the children. Scribbling began.

On returning to England, fiction had to take a back seat as real life took over, you know the sort of thing - a proper job to keep feeding the mortgage and the growing family, and chores, chores and more chores. But a love of writing finally erupted into regular tap-tapping. I've written and read for the BBC and published short stories.

Finally, a little more time was found, seven novels h

I sat in a hidey hole on the cliffs to do my homework, never dreaming that one day I would incorporate my secret getaway into a book (One Dark Night). I visited smugglers caves and was enthralled with the great caverns that had been carved out and lengthy, miles long tunnels. They featured in Hide in Time. And yes, I have sailed. Not very well but the family have chartered yachts on Loch Lomond and in the Lake District. And we've sailed around the Isle of Wight quite a bit. Once in a gale, gusting to force 8. Exciting, though progress was slow!

Most fascinating resource? Definitely real life. And observing people.(less)

I set aside 15 hours a week, which isn't as much as I'd like. As I write historical novels, if the telephone rings it jolts me right out of the nineteenth century, then I decide it's a good time to make a cup of tea. Or my grown up family arrive, or... I expect we all know what it's like. And once that allocated time has gone, it's difficult to replace it.

When do I write? When I can be sure of silence. With one exception - when my husband is playing his guitar somehow it sets the mood. It's how we met, you see.

Where do I write? I have a room set aside for all things 'officey'. I work from home, it used to be full time but I have trimmed it down to part time. Now I am busy chucking out the old life and filling the filing cabinet with writing related matters.

Thank you, Alice, you've made me see I need to be much more disciplined with that 15 hours!

Improving the World

“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.”

Anne Frank, who hid from danger for such a long time in the Second World War, wrote the above. Inspirational to those of us who, are watching world events, as she did, with a touch of fear in our hearts. I’m digging around in my brain to see if I can find something I can do to improve the world. Diffi Read more of this blog post »
