Sometimes the words just don't flow. On those days, I do one of a number of things: depending on how many writing projects I have going on at once, I might take a look at a different story. Or I might do some research. Research always gets me back in the writing mood. If those things don't work, I stop writing altogether and do something else. I go out and experience life. I socialize, interact with others, and then...before I know it...the words start to flow again.(less)

Readers have told me that I have a unique voice; a different way of telling a story. But there really isn't any right or wrong way. That's what I love about writing. It's really about being creative, and who we are as a person. (less)

The Arrival of Destiny by A.L. Mengel
“The Colonia novels really are my problem child. One giant story, two split volumes, and no resolution to The Arrival of Destiny. I read a review on Books a Million today from a reader who didn't understand the first novel when reading it, but still read the second, Battle of the Trinity. In the review, she stated that she understood the purpose for The Arrival of Destiny after reading the entire story, and then said she loved it, when looking back on it. The Colonia project was tough because of how the story progressed. But I was happy to read that review. I love when readers get it. It's so exhilarating!”

Three Letters by A.L. Mengel
“From the moment of birth until the moment of our death, the heart is the center of our existence. It beats, pumps blood throughout our body, and allows us to live, whether or not we are aware of its presence, or if we spend each day working to preserve it.”

“Cemeteries are like a giant library of stories.”
A.L. Mengel, The Mortician

“In our lives, there is a path of stepping stones laid before us. They stretch out towards the horizon, until we cannot see them anymore. It takes courage, and fortitude, to make it to that next stone, for the conditions may not always be ideal for success. But stay focused. Be determined. And you will make it to the next stone.”
A.L. Mengel, #PaintTheWorld: How To Connect People With Your Talent

“I don't sit down and force words. I let them flow naturally. Makes for a much better story, I feel. Some days I write a couple hundred, others a couple thousand. There is no standard, and I still have an annual release.”

“Finishing a manuscript is an achievement. Writers are common, but authors are rare. It's fun to talk about a book, even to start a book. But then the writer must work. Persevere and overcome barriers to success. If they reach the end...they have achieved what countless cannot.”
