"Am I giving this book a two star "it was OK" because I expected too much from all the hype? I don't think so. I suspect if I had not heard repeatedly that it was great I might not even have finished it. I could not get traction until the final third "

“The gotta, as in: “I think I’ll stay up another fifteen-twenty minutes, honey, I gotta see how this chapter comes out.” Even though the guy who says it spent the day at work thinking about getting laid and knows the odds are good his wife is going to be asleep when he finally gets up to the bedroom. The gotta, as in: “I know I should be starting supper now — he’ll be mad if it’s TV dinners again — but I gotta see how this ends.” I gotta know will she live. I gotta know will he catch the shitheel who killed his father. I gotta know if she finds out her best friend’s screwing her husband. The gotta. Nasty as a hand-job in a sleazy bar, fine as a fuck from the world’s most talented call-girl. Oh boy it was bad and oh boy it was good and oh boy in the end it didn’t matter how rude it was or how crude it was because in the end it was just like the Jacksons said on that record — don’t stop til you get enough.”

“Anybody who likes writing a book is an idiot. Because it's impossible, it's like having a homework assignment every stinking day until it's done. And by the time you get it in, it's done and you're sitting there reading it, and you realize the 12,000 things you didn't do. I mean, writing isn't fun. It's never been fun. It's momentum, and once you get the momentum going, that's great, but it's a brutal experience in many, many ways. And when you're done, people tell you "Well, gee, I'm not interested." "Great, I'm glad I sat down and wrote this!”

Thanks Lynn, I just read it and commented on it. Personally, I think authors have every right to review books. We love reading books and talking about books just as much as non-writers. And we shouldn't be afraid of hurting an author's feelings. If you're putting your book out there to be read by total strangers, then you need to grow a thick skin.
Judy, I wonder if you had read this blog post? I read it and thought of you and what you have said about reviewing. This post has given me a lot of food for thought. http://writinginflow.blogspot.com/2013/09/being-honest-or-career-suicide.html
