“બાળકો પતંગ જેવા હોય છે. એમને ખૂબ ઉંચે ઉડવું હોય છે, દૂર દૂર સુધીની દુનિયા જોવી હોય છે. મા-બાપની ફરજ છે કે એમની ડોર પોતાના હાથમાં રાખી એમને જમીન સાથે જોડાયેલા રાખવા. પવન અનુકૂળ હોય તો ઢીલ છોડવી, પણ ગોથા ખાવા લાગે તો ડોર થોડી ખેંચી લેવી. કપાવાનો ભય હોય તો થોડે દૂર પણ ખસેડી લેવી કારણ કે કપાયેલી પતંગનું ભવિષ્ય અકળ હોય છે. કોઈ સારા હાથમાં પડે અને ફરી ઉડવા માંડે તો વાંધો નહિ પણ કશે ફસાઈને તૂટી-ફૂટી જાય તો એ નુકસાન કાયમી હશે.”

1938 માં લખાયેલ પુસ્તક હિમાલયનો પ્રવાસમાં કાકા સાહેબ કાલેલકરે ભારતના વિવિધ પ્રાંતમાંથી પ્રયાગરાજ આવતા યાત્રાળુઓનું વર્ણન કર્યું છે. વાંચીને લાગે છે કે આજે 80 વર્ષ પછી પણ પ્રાંતીય લાક્ષણિકતાઓ ખાસ બદલાઈ નથી. "સાધારણ રીતે આપણે સિંધીઓને જોઈએ છીએ ત્યારે અરધા અંગ્રેજ ને અરધા પારસી જેવા દેખાય છે. પણ તીર્થક્ષેત્રમાં અત્યંત ભાવિકતા બતાવનારા અને ભક્તિથી ગળગળા થનારા યાત્રાળુઓમાં સિંધનો નંબર પહેલો આવે. મહારાષ્ટ્રીઓ થોડા વખતમાં અને થોડે ખરચે વધારે કેટલું જોવાય અને કેટલા પુણ્યનો સંચય થાય એ તરફ જ નજર રાખનારા હોય છે. ગુજરાતીઓ હંમેશા ખાવાપીવાની સગવડની શોધમાં ફરતા દેખાય છે. અને બંગાળીઓ પોતાનો ભક્તિનો ઊભરો આખી દુનિયાની નજરે બરાબર પડે એ વિષે વધારે ઇંતેજાર દેખાય છે. મદ્રાસીઓ મોઢા પરથી દેખાય છે હોશિયાર, પણ હિન્દી ન જાણતા હોવાને લીધે અને એમના વિચિત્ર રિવાજ અને પોશાકને લીધે રોઝ જેવા જ્યાં ત્યાં ફરતા દેખાય છે. મજૂરો અને ગાડીવાળાઓ સાથે એમને બનતું જ નથી.
સંયુક્ત પ્રાંતના લોકોને માટે પ્રયાગ કંઈ પારકો મુલક નથી. તેઓ તો રીતસર રૂદાર અંગરખા પહેરીને, માથા પરની ટોપી જરાક ત્રાંસી રાખીને પાન ચાવતા ચાવતા, પોઠિયાની પેઠે બધે ફરતા ફરે છે. અંગ્રેજી ભણેલો માણસ ગમે તે પ્રાંતનો હોય, એની જાત નોખી જ પડવાની. યાત્રાને આવે ઠેકાણે પોતે આવ્યો એમાં પોતાની કેળવણીને કાંઈ એબ લાગી ન હોય એવી મુખમુદ્રા ધારણ કરીને તે અતડો અતડો ફરે છે."
