| Fanny and Ned are an engaged couple, and cloyingly in love. Fanny's friend is convinced that all men cheat when they can, and convinces her to create a non-existant woman to test Ned out. And Ned's friend bets him to answer her letter. Complications, ...more | |

| The author is an advocate of the Montessori teaching system. It seems to me that this only works if you have unlimited time, space and money, and thus is out of the reach of most parents. Some of her ideas are also rather dangerous, like allowing an ...more | |

The Fossil Trail: How We Know What We Think We Know About Human Evolution
by Ian Tattersall (Goodreads Author) |
|
| It's a fun title, but makes an important point, which the author stresses time and again: what we know about the prehistory of human evolution isn't quite as obvious as many books make out. Facts have been mixed with assumptions that the discoverers ...more | |

| Annette and her friends go sailing - into trouble, as usual. Their boat is swamped and damaged, and recent arrivals in Smugglers' Cove seem to be at the heart of it. This is perhaps the least interesting of the series and the final book has a new aut ...more | |

| Possibly the dullest run of the comic ever, almost the entire volume of this collection is a single boring story in which Kang takes on the Avengers - again and again and again. If that's not dull enough, the main plot is the origin of both the Visio ...more | |

| This Ace Double teams up two thrillers. First up (depending how you read it) is "Drag The Dark", in which detectives Cole and Speare are hired to track down George Goodlie's missing daughter. She's apparently run off to marry a cheat and thief, who s ...more | |

| In old New York - the Gilded Age - Newland Archer is set to marry May Welland. Then he is introduced to her unconventional cousin, the Countess Olenska, with rather predictable results. Slow-moving and mannered, it's not a book to draw you to any of ...more | |

| A thick volume of X-Men stories, some humorous, some tragic. Lots of fighting, and plenty of confusing plots as Chris Claremont keeps diverting into dreams, hallucinations and prophecies which tend to lose the threads of the stories. Oh, and he keeps ...more | |

| Mesquite Jenkins is a cowhand and a drifter, and he tries to avoid complicating his life. But he seems to have a habit of helping people in need. This time, it's John Jordan and his pretty sister, Sarah. They've bought a ranch, but are real tenderfee ...more | |
“There's always the possibility that you're going to come across a record that transforms your life. And it happens weekly. It's like a leaf on the stream. There are little currents and eddies and sticks lying in the water that nudge you in a slightly different direction. And then you break loose and carry on down the current. There's nothing that actually stops you and lifts you out of the water and puts you on the bank but there are diversions and distractions and alarums and excursions which is what makes life interesting really. It's fantastic.”
