Similar to a ray or skate, this species once occurred in waters throughout the Mediterranean Sean and long the eastern Atlantic Ocean from Scandinavia to Mauritania. They are now rarely found in their natural habitat with one exception – The Canary Islands. They have a unique way of breathing compared to most other benthic fish. They do not pump water from the oropharyngeal cavity like other fish. Instead, they use gill flaps located under their body to pump out water during respiration. Doing so allows them to be more discreet and prevent detection.
