The idea for this list began with my enjoyment of three stories: The Red Violin (a movie, not a book), The Girl in Hyacinth Blue, and The People of the Book. These books focus on the provenance of an object (a violin, a painting, and a book, respectively) and the role this object plays in the lives of its various owners throughout time. I hope, through this list, to discover more books that belong to this family.

I did wonder about that, but one of the definitions of 'object' in my dictionary is "a thing observed" - so any 'thing' counts...unless the list creator wants to specify that the objects should be inanimate?
I love the divergent perspectives on my original short description for this list! I did indeed have something specific in mind for this list and have updated the description to reflect this. However, the list has already been successful in introducing me to a book that I had not read that seems to belong equally to the family that inspired it: Annie Proulx's Accordion Crimes. I wonder if there are more?
Accordian Crimes is amazing, but then in my eyes most things that Annie Proulx writes are.I have this inkling that I know more books like this, but so far, the mind is hazy.
I suppose it would be too much of a stretch to include Edward Rutherfurd's books here, wouldn't it? They do follow some core "thing" over time, but the thing in question is a particular city, country or geographical area -- which however is not only the focus of the book but becomes a character in its own right, and is followed via the interconnected destinies of several families living in the city/country/region in question.
