Fiona Oh Goodness,

I have been looking for a book that I have forgotten the Name of and the authors name......

Can anyone help??? from what I can remember it is an old book, written in the 50's??

" the story is set WW2 (I think) in America, Young lad sees a beautiful horse running wild near where he lives and slowly he befriends it and he rides it to and from school.

He then rides home in a snow storm, and the horse insists on going off the road home and the young lad and horse find a young soldier in the snow - they take him to the lads home....."

Does this ring any bells with anyone???

Thanks for thinking about it....

Fi

message 6: by Claire (new)

Claire McGahan Hi! I was wondering if any of you knew of two books I am trying to locate. I can't remember the titles or the authors but I do remember basic details about them.

The first is about a girl riding in Pasadena and is tired of riding her school horse, Sugar, because she doesn't think he'll be able to take her far. She discovers a ranch in the Arroyo Seco and trains a horse there, only to discover the horse and the brother and sister that take care of the horse are ghosts.

The second is I think about a girl with a race horse. She's a jokey for him, which is a notable feat seeing as she was born with one leg shorter than the other. The horse was an unlikely racer, seeing as it had horribly crooked legs when it was born. It has a sequel.

Thanks so much!!

-Claire

Yes! Blaze of Glory by M.Garzon is about a Jumper rider, although there's also some polo and plenty of barn life in the story. It's a great book and just came out recently. The Perfect Distance (sorry don't remember the author's name, it's a bit older) is more YA, it's about a rider competing in the Medal/Maclay classes. Enjoy!

message 16: by Anna (new)

Anna Hi Everyone,

New here and I've just added a couple of books to the list. One British classic in the shape of "Dora at Follyfoot" and a new one, which I've just finished and thought was absolutely astonishingly brilliant called "Eleanor McGraw, a pony named Mouse and a boy called Fire". It really breaks all moulds!

I published HALT AT X this year. You might be interested in it: the protagonist rehabs an ex-racehorse for dressage and trains in a hunter/jumper barn. She is a VP fundraiser trying to save the reputation of her college from the illegal antics of her new boss--the flashy new college president. There are many horses and other animals in the novel.

Kari Why the Children's Books? Goodreads is for finding something to read and as an adult I do not want to read them no matter how good . Same for the young adult books I read them when I was younger and don't want to read them now. Too much time wading through them should separate by age group.

What a baffling comment.
Surely, a good book is a good book. Some of the best books (and classics) ever written were 'childrens' books, e.g. The Little Prince.
And a horse book is a horse book, is it not?
The list is entitled 'Horse Books/Novels', not 'Horse Books for Adults'. You could start one of those though, it's a free world... :)
Alternatively, to spare you any more onerous footwork, there is a thread already in the Horse Lovers Central group that deals with horse books for adults here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...
Have a look.

message 24: by Symoen Christopher (last edited May 02, 2017 03:55AM) (new)

Symoen Christopher Can anyone help me?
I used to read a book as a kid, I cannot remember the title or any character names except for the horse was Honey.
It was about a girl who wanted a horse, and they eventually moved to the country and she and her dad went to look at alot of horses but none of them were right. Then, she finds an abandoned horse in a paddock that is injured badly. They get the vet to help the horse and eventually she gets to keep Honey. By the end of the book, she enters a competition with Honey and sells brow bands she made at the competition.
Sorry if this isn't much help, but I remember the horse Honey and that's all.

message 25: by Cassandra (last edited Jun 18, 2020 10:24PM) (new)

Cassandra I found William Golden's A Princess Bride on this list at 182. You also have Shane at 1176.

Do people not understand that just because a book has horses in it here and there, that does not make it a book about a horse or about horses? Or do they just not care that they're ruining these lists?

message 26: by Bob (new)

Bob Van Arsdale First of all, I apologize to anyone who feels that I am "ruining" this list for him or her. I'm one of the 4 voters who voted for "The Princess Bride", and the listing of "Shane" is mine. But I seem to have a different take on this list, and perhaps I'm missing something... Where does it say that this list is "ABOUT" horses ? What I see as a description for content on this list when I logon is: "Novels and general Books RELATED < emphasis is mine > to horses, riding and the barn life". I've limited my list entries (...at least in my own mind...) to books that fit that description. OI course, the owner of the list can, and should, arbiter the list in any fashion he or she seems fit. Personally, I enjoy finding books on this list that are not simply equine juvenilia, but are complex enough to be "ABOUT" any number of subjects, horses included.

message 27: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl Yes, it would've been good if the person who started the list was more clear in the description. I don't think the list is ruined, yet, but if we include every western, every historical fiction, just because there are horses in it, well, surely that wasn't the intent of the creator of the list.

It is very easy to start a list of your own for which you can define the exact parameters that you want. You can even post a link here in the comments and those of us who are interested can go populate & vote on your list.

Btw, Princess Bride is for all ages, especially juvenile. I have loved it since I was 10.

message 28: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Hi:

I am looking for a book I read between the years of 2005-2009. I was a young teenager. It had a picture of a white horse, and a red stall. I seem to recall it had a sister and a brother, and maybe a divorce. It is a fiction/YA read.

TIA.

Hi! I’m aware this is pretty old, but I believe the second book you are talking about is Willow King by Chris Platt.

message 32: by Jeanne (new)

Jeanne Grunert Jean Slaughter Doty's books - all of them - deserve to be on this list. Summer Pony, Winter Pony, The Crumb, The Monday Horses, and Can I Get There by Candelight? are some of the best YA horse stories around. They may be out of print, but they are wonderful for horse lovers!
