Sadly now defunct, but an excellent list of novels, often easy to find for cheap second hand, and their distinctive cover design makes them easy to spot...Add more if you find them (and change the edition on here to the correct one if you know how...)

Mala Why this name for this list? Do the books listed here come in a series of four?

message 2: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan No - was an imprint offshoot from http://quartetbooks.co.uk/

Existed in the 70's and 80's (and maybe early 90s?) as far as i can see, then just stopped...little about it on the internet but they put out a lot of interesting translations of world lit

message 3: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Bursey Sadly, where I live these books would never show up as we're too far removed from the beaten track. Nice to contemplate, though, Jonathan.

message 4: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Part of me is just curious to know what happened to the imprint - I guess they just became loss making so the publisher dropped them.

message 5: by Kamakana (new)

Kamakana thanks for the list, Jonathan!

message 6: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Yes, thanks. Nice list.

message 7: by Richard (new)

Richard Jonathan, I would like to vote on this but, sadly, most of the books are not familiar.

message 8: by Mercurialgem (new)

Mercurialgem Is this a list of just rare books? I know I've bought some rare ones but don't have titles......would have to dig through my books.

No - it is a list of books put out in the "Quartet Encounters" series by Quartet publishing in the 70s and 80s - they published a lot of interesting works in translation that had not been published before (or since in many cases) and then seem to have simply stopped as an imprint. Some books got picked up by other publishers, but many did not.

I put it here more as a way of organizing them together, and to maybe get some interesting books on people's TBR lists.

message 10: by Mercurialgem (new)

Mercurialgem Ohhh, gotcha....thanks.

Jonathan Their distinctive design makes them easy to spot:

message 12: by Nathan "N.R." (new)

Nathan "N.R." Gaddis Sweet. I like to judge books by covers. Virago. The Other Europe. Now Quartet Encounters. [another stroke against Listopia ; list=makers can't choose editions to add] (suggestion?; place on or two of those links in the description up top?) Thanks.

message 13: by Caroline (new)

Caroline So I went to the link with the covers, saw Froth on the Daydream, checked the GR reviews (thank you friends) and fed it into Abebooks. Whoa. Looks like it will remain a daydream for me.

message 14: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan the same book was translated as "Foam on the Daze" and "Mood Indigo" (I think they even made a movie of it recently) - I have no idea which translation is the best, but it may be easier to find cheaper versions of those ones

message 15: by Caroline (new)

Caroline Thanks. Will keep an eye out. But I really liked that cover. That and Manny's review.

Thanks! I believe the quartet version is the Chapman...

That's very helpful; thanks. My library has the Chapman, but I'm also going to order a $3.50 copy of the original because you piqued my curiosity about what Vian actually wrote.
