This listopia is to help each other recommend and find SPACE OPERA themed comic books and manga novels. These listopias can quickly become useless if you don't follow the rules, so please only list the following:
1. Only the FIRST book in each unique SERIES or we'll end up with 50,000 issues of the same Gundam or Flash Gordon. If there is more than one sub-series, if they are similar list only the first one, if they are a completely different spinoff, then list that omnibus or series starter as well.
2. If a long-running comic has an omnibus edition, that is the preferred one to list.
3. Only space opera comic/manga is welcome here, which means a larger-than-life story set in space, conveyed via a graphic (pictoral) format in either color or black-and-white.
4. VOTE ON YOUR FAVORITES SO THE CREAM RISES TO THE TOP!!!
We keep other space opera themed listopias in many sub-genres, so come and visit us at the Space Opera Fans Community and see if we have something that might tickle your fancy?
HERE: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...
AUTHORS: these listopias are a pain-in-the-butt to censor (requires grovelling to Goodreads administration), so you will not endear yourself to the very small and intimate community of avid sci-fi readers you hope to reach if you are a jerk and spam this list with irrelevant crap or every...single...book in your series. You will quickly find yourself blacklisted from people's reading lists if you act like a jerk, so please be polite and follow the rules. I voted for those that I have read and liked. For some reason Saga fails to grab me (I want to like it, but it just isnt a must read for me).

Goodreads will eventually rank these using a combination of how many votes the book has, overall Goodreads star-rating, and how many star-ratings it has, so the cream will begin to rise to the top.

Oh, I don't want what I said as a knock against Saga. I know I'm in the minority when it comes to the title. Not intending to cause trouble.
Question: For those who have read the Paul Levitz/Keith Giffen/Tom and Mary Bierbaum Legion of Super Heroes 5 Years After stories should we resort to the Great Darkness Saga TPB or just give up on listing it here.I wish DC would collect those issues. It is my favorite LSH run, and is better than the Abnett and Bendis Guardians stories.
Najaf wrote: "does this qualify as an space opera https://www.goodreads.com/series/9382..."I like Storm Dogs, and I personally find it a close call. For me, and yes I'm likely splitting hairs despite being bald, its more of the science fiction/detective-police procedural (which is actually how I think of Grimjack which I love).
I'd list it along with Image Comics' Copperhead and maybe Faster than Light.
My own position (as Borg Queen / mod) is to adopt an expansive definition of Space Opera.1) Gotta be sci-fi or sci-fantasy with a heavy sci-fi component;
2) Gotta be set mostly in space;
3) Gotta have a large cast of characters, actors, and angles;
4) Gotta have some kind of over-arching enemy or quest;
5) Gotta have a romantic element to it (not necessarily romance, but romantic as in it idealizes some kind of hero or ideal);
6) Spaceships!!! Or at least a presumption of space travel.
7) The focus us usually on overcoming the obstacle / the quest, not the science. The science is usually just presumed to already exist. The focus is on the DRAMA. I.e., Battlestar Galactica is space opera.
8) Space opera books tend to be doorstoppers or long-running serializations.
Hope this helps? I don't want to get into a situation where we argue about sub-sub-genres. Right now there is not (compared to other genres) a lot of space opera comic book series or manga series, so we can afford to be permissive so long as the recommendation fits in the SPIRIT of the list.
Grazie for the clarification.If anyone ever wants to go back issue bin diving:
Dynamo Joe

Starslayer

Please excuse the wikipedia entries, but I wanted to provide descriptions for the titles in case anyone was curious. These books are unlikely to be re-published or collected as a lot of First Comics inventory remains tied up legally. It's amazing Baron/Rude were able to get Nexus back (and for Baron, Badger) and Ostrander Grimjack.
Trike wrote: "ODY-C, Vol. 1 qualifies. I don't like it at all, but it fits under the umbrella of Space Opera."Damn-I should not have forgotten that title.
Just a reminder, guys ... listopias are meant to be BY and FOR the people, so if you feel a comic or manga novel meets the criteria and belongs on this listopia, put it on. Just remember to follow the 'only the first in the series' rule so it doesn't become as useless as trying to find something different on Amazon (which makes you sift through a gazillion Star Wars comics before you can find something different among the quite literally thousands of mass market titles).To add a book:
1) Go to the top of the listopia (above the actual books) and click Add Books to this List;
2) Click either 'Add Books From My List' or 'Search'. The first one will only search your personal Goodreads review library, the second will search all of Goodreads;
3) Type in the book you want to add. Click 'Add;'
4) The book will appear on the Listopia, usually near the bottom, and then will gradually work its way up as Goodreads 'ranks' it according to a combination of number of votes, number of reviews and star-rating.
Happy adding! This listopia is for you guys to help one another find cool stuff, as well as people in general who might go to Google and type in 'Space Opera Comics' or 'Space Opera Manga.' These listopias tend to show up really high on their search rankings. And check out our keywords ... if you think a keyword might give us better SEO, suggest it. Only -I- can add more keywords, but you guys can add and vote on books.
