Goodreads asked Brandon Varnell:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Brandon Varnell The idea for my story actually came from watching anime and reading manga. I've always been fascinated by the way the Japanese media tells their stories in anime and manga, and after watching several Rom-Coms overflowing with ridiculous amounts of fan service and slapstick humor, wanted to try my hand at making a story composed of tropes found in Japanese pop culture but with a Western setting.

The idea to use Yokai--and Kitsune in particular--actually came from Japanese mythology. American novels based on mythology have a tendency to be about Greek or Roman mythology. I know a few that are also based on Hindu mythological figures, but it's mostly Greek... and sometimes Norse. I wanted to do something different, which is why I came up with the idea of using Yokai instead. This combination is what created the basis for my book series.
