Disappointment Over Zoey Deutch being cast as Rose

THIS IS JUST MY OPINIONS UPON SEEING THE CAST PICTURES AND WHAT I KNOW OF THEM I AM IN NO WAY ATTACKING THE ACTRESS AND MY OPINION WILL CHANGE AS I FIND OUT NEW INFORMATION SO KEEP YOUR COMMENTS ABOUT HOW IM BEING MEAN TO YOURSELF!!
So as hardcore VA fans would know the movie version of this book Vampire Academy:Blood Sisters is being released next year on Valentines Day and we now know who Zoey,Lissa and Dimitri are.
I personally think Dimitri is perfect and don't really have an opinion of Lissa because i haven't seen Lucy Fry in anything before but than along comes the choice of Rose. Zoey Deutch is actually a pretty good actress from what i've seen of her but i'm disappointed that she was chosen as Rose. It isn't even just the fact that she's a whitewashed version of Rose, she's just to small and Rose is supposed to be athletic and curvy, she also comes off as to sweet whilst Rose is most certainly not. I am giving this movie and Zoey a chance but i'm still skeptical (although not entirely because of her, i've just seen to many movie adaptions of book series butchered recently like Beautiful Creatures and other castings i feel were wrong like Jace in City of Bones and Hannah in Thirteen Reasons Why, which hasn't started production yet but Selena Gomez.....just no)
So please feel free to share your opinions <3

I haven't seen Zoey Deutch act yet and I don't think she's the person meant to play 'Rose' but I'm still optimistic. Who know? She might be great and prove me wrong which is what I'm really hoping for.

I always hoped that Phoebe Tonkin would be casted as 'Rose' though. She looks just like her and she's a great actress.

They totally whitewashed Rose, but plenty of fans won't care as long as they have someone who looks like them on screen. If you noticed, all these YA fantasy heroines from books turned movies are all starting to look alike even if they didn't look like that in the books. I have never seen a "desert princess" that is supposed to look like Zoey.

To the people who say she can just get a tan, that is disgusting. Yea. Let's just brownface the girl. When they say things like that, it automatically means that they know Rose shouldn't be that color but they refuse to say that they should have found an actress who fell more inline with Rose's color instead of just another white girl.

Whitewashing is a real issue and people don't just go around using the word lightly, but others refuse to acknowledge it. People who are right in the matter get criticized for it and told to shut up and be quiet because that isn't it. They say that it is your problem and you are the one being a spoil sport and not accepting the actor until it's their turn when they don't like the actor and we are just supposed to accept their opinion.

These are probably gonna be the same people who say they just chose the best actor for the part and it isn't whitewashing when the trailer and movie for Gods of Egypt come out and it is filled with nothing but white people.

Pooja Prabhu Rose is half Turkish. Her father, Abe Mazur, is a full blooded Turkish moroi. Rose has skin that looks like it has a slight tan. She definitely was no ...more

My issue with Zoey as Rose is that the casting IS white washing her. It's not about Zoey's acting (at least for me since I've never seen her act before). Rose being half white doesn't negate the fact that the casting white washed her, because in the books Rose is described as looking like her father IBRAHIM who is TURKISH (which is in the MIDDLE EAST, and which is considered by some sources I've read to be a part of WESTERN ASIA). Rose is HALF MIDDLE EASTERN and HALF SCOTTISH. She is NOT FULL WHITE.

In Frostbite (at least I think it's Frostbite) Janine gives Rose the nazar and tells her it was given to her by her father and is from the MIDDLE EAST. There are enough actresses/aspiring actresses in the world that the casting directors could have found an actress of Middle East descent, or at least an actress who didn't look Anglo-Saxon white. Having a Middle Eastern actress play Rose could have changed how people of Middle Eastern descent are viewed/treated in the world. Or could have at least been the beginning of change.

Really? So what if Zoey can tan? It doesn't change the fact that her casting IS WHITE WASHING Rose. And no Zoey does NOT have color, she's PALE.

Learning more and more about the VA movie as a whole it looks WAAAAAY too much like Mean Girls. The VA book series IS NOT a comedy, it has comedic moments, but the series IS DARK. I REALLY, REALLY hope I'm wrong and the VA film is a solid adaptation of the book, but from what I've seen, I'm worried.

So many people are disappointed in Zoey but I thought "that's Rose" when I saw her. She was funny and snarky and I thought she did a good job. I don't know what all the "whitewash" stuff is about but I thought they did a good job with that casting. You know who disappointed me? Dimitri! I did not find him sexy, attractive or appealing and didn't look how I imagined he would at all. I looked him up and pictures of him on the internet looked a lot more attractive than they made him for the movie. It was like they "uglied' him up or something. It was the hair, I think. I was disappointed when I saw him in the trailer and it didn't get any better when I saw the movie. I think they made him look way too old for her, even though he was supposed to be 7 or 8 years.

Pooja Prabhu Actually, in my opinion, Benjamin Barnes would have been a better fit for Dimitri, but rumour has it he refused the role :(

Zoey is beautiful and a good actress but I didnt like her in the movie. The book mentioned that rose was a busty, brown/tanned girl and Zoey doesnt exactly fit that image...sure they put her in a super push up bra during the lust charm scene but she's generally a super skinny girl. Then again, I'm usually picky about some details like this. For me it would be like putting a green cape on superman. Its just not right.
I always thought Rose as this cool, kickass, rather hot tempered and angry character but watching the movie gave me this feeling of a confused, innocent and naive little girl which was also another dissappointment.

I also didnt like the casting for Lissa but after watching the movie I thought that she was a good cast. I first thought she looked a bit too old and mature to be Lissa but she played her role so well and she actually fit her description, tall, blonde, gorgeous.

Mason also looked too skinny and geeky for a dhampir in general. He trained all his life and has to fight and protect for a living. If a guardian looked like the cast for Mason, I'd be worried that the strigoi would snap him by blowing at him.

How does everyone feel about the guy who is playing Dimitri? Personally, he looks NOTHING like my Dimitri except for the fact that his hair is longer. Hopefully he will be a good actor but right now I'm not feeling to optimistic about this movie which is a real disappointment... :(

I give up. It's apparently too hard to satisfy anyone. So grow up. Not happy with Zoey? Dont watch it, simple as that. and for God's sake look at the covers of the book's, she looks pretty damn pale to me, despite the description.

Dimitri looks like a little boy- not the strong man described.

Lissa isn't what I imagined, but I mean, I don't really have an opinion on her actress, she's not as beautiful as Lissa is described.

Rose is just not what I imagined. Rose is supposed to be SO attractive, and Zoey just isn't. She's pretty, but not Rose attractive.

I didn't even know a movie was coming out till today. So disappointed the poster looks corny. The girl playing Rose does't fit the character's demeanor,or physical appearance. I know film adaptations of books are never 100%, but when the book clearly states what someones appearance is I think they should do their best to cast someone who sort of fits it. Sadly Deutch doesn't, and as a faithful and loving reader of the series I think I have a right to say what I want about the characters.

I think Zoey is ok as rose. she understands the emotions and all, plus she looks good as Rose.

I'm not a hardcore fan anymore, but I am still looking forward to the movie. People complain about every casting in most movies in general. Hell, in Burton's Batman people actually petitioned to get Micheal Keaton off the cast and now he's considered one of the better Batman portrayals by fans. People went ballistic when Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker decrying him before the movie came out. And he's quickly become one of the definitive Jokers (he's my personal favorite along with Mark Hamil and the guy who plays him in Arkham Origins. Props to Jack, though.)
I think it depends more on whether or not the Director is good and how much they care about the source material. With good direction the cast can portray their characters very well. With little or poor direction talent is often squandered.
Look at Tim Curry in the third Addams Family movie from the 90s. Despite his acting and comedic talent and his usually suave (albeit creepy) demeanor, his Gomez is considered one of the worst portrayals.
There's makeup, there's stunts, there's hair and wardrobe. So who knows what the cast will look like during the actual movie. As long as they play their roles well and the movie portrays the book well, then I won't worry too much. I'll always have my versions of the characters no matter who plays them.
As to Whitewashing, yeah, no. You want to see whitewashing? Go watch the abomination of a movie known as "Avatar the Last Air Bender." THAT is whitewashing.

(don't judge me guyss) but all throughout the book, Rose was described with huge breast and the author is always pointing out that it's bigger than the others but when I saw the movie. I was disappointed because Zoey was kinda average and it really just get off the whole attitude thingy

Okay, so I saw the movie before I read the books and kinda created my picture of the characters based on the actors. Now I'm a huge fan. I'm pretty much happy with most of the cast, there's one thing I slightly dissagree with. I LOVE Cameron Monaghan as Mason, he really is all that cute as Mason is described, although some say he's too skinny... No, I don't think so, I just think he could look better if they gave him blue contacts (like they did with Lissa) and if he had a better haircut. Because Cameron is really hot, but (I'm sorry, I know how shallow I sound) he just looks much better with his hair long and up. You know? And it's also said that Mason's hair is a mess. Well, I liked the movie and I REALLY hope they make a Frostbite, and I hope they don't mess up with Adrian, because he's my favorite in the whole world.

I can understand the disappointment some of the fans are feeling. I can also see how they may feel like the character of Rose has been whitewashed as it's something that happens far too often with characters who aren't white. It's not so much about wanting the characters to look exactly how we imagined them. I think we all understand that impossible to accomplish. But I wouldn't mind the characters, especially the main character, to at least look somewhat like the AUTHOR described them and Zoey just doesn't.

That being said, though, I don't think she did a bad job in the role. She wasn't the best, but I found her entertaining. She was certainly better than the people they picked for Lissa and Dimitri, no offense to actors of course. I just don't think they fit the roles.

My guess is when they were casting rose they were not going for someone who would look like Rose and pull through with Rose's Personality, they were probably going for Someone who could pull through with Rose's personality. And Zoey was actually not bad with playing the role of Rose personality wise.

Plus movie and books are not always the same with how characters look, same with how tv shows and books are not always the same.

movies and tv shows are limited with the amount of information that they can put into them from the books plus movies and tv shows like to change things up a bit no one wants to sit through a movie that is way longer than 2-3 hours, plus it would not be as much fun to go a movie when you know the whole entire story after reading the books(especially when people know certain characters are going to die) it is not as much fun to watch a movie or tv show that completely follows the books, seeing that would get Boring after awhile people would already know what happens after reading the book series it is why tv shows and movies try their hardest to change things up a bit to keep things exciting for fans to watch so fans do not end up finding movies and Tv shows too predictable. Who would want to watch a movie that is predictable with every single event in it? Iam sure if movies and tv series were always 100% predictable they would fall even more down hill they already are.

and to all those who think Zoey looked a little too whitewashed should keep in mind that Zoey was playing a hybrid(Half Vampire Half Human:Dhampir) and vampires are pale looking(Iam guessing the same goes for dhampir's since they are half vampire half human.) so of course Rose for the Movie would end up looking half white either way no matter who they would of casted Rose is Half Human Half Vampire:Dhampir. She is not even a full vampire:Moroi, like Lissa Is.

And Iam guessing the casting directors were looking for two girls who would be like blood sisters/best friends. And Lucy fry and Zoey Deutch actually fit that description because in Real Life they are actually best friends and Iam guessing the Age difference between the characters in book and the actors in real life should not really matter since they are playing vampires or hybrids. Plus to me they are actually not all that bad at acting they have acted before it is not like they casted someone who has no experience in the acting business(like a couple of the actors who's only acting project includes just vampire academy.

I've got to say that if "sara shahi" was young enough, she wouldve been a perfect rose, she's half middle eastern, she's a fucking badass (eg. person of interest) and she's a generally amazing actress...shame she's 36

“My dhampir mother was Scottish—red-haired with a ridiculous accent—and I’d been told my Moroi dad was Turkish. That genetic combination had given me skin the same color as the inside of an almond, along with what I liked to think were semi-exotic desert-princess features: big dark eyes and hair so deep brown that it usually looked black.” - Rose Hathaway, Book 1.

Thank you for brining this to peoples attention. Whitewashing is an issue, and it doesn’t sit well with me that Rose was whitewashed. It has nothing to do with Zoey Deutch as an actress; she’s amazing, funny and talented. But the character of Rose Hathaway is biracial, she is half Scottish and half Turkish, and I don’t think it’s right that they didn’t choose an actress with some mixed heritage.

For people who say that because Rose is white on the book cover therefore she must be white, that doesn’t mean anything. Authors don’t choose their book covers, they are chosen by the book companies art department so usually the covers don’t match the book’s descriptions. I mean on the Frostbite cover Rose is depicted as blonde. If you want accurate pictures of Rose look at the Vampire Academy graphic novels.

I think zoey is great to play the role. well she's not perfectly suit the character. but when i see the movie trailer, i know how badass she is.

However, she's a little too sweet to be Rose Hathaway. I don't see any fierceness in her face.

Well, i can't judge her before the movie comes out, right? I think we should wait until the movie comes out and then we can judge her based on her performance in that movie. Fair enough, right?

I really wasn´t feeling this girl... for the character. She might be a great actress for all I know but my inner fan girl won´t shut up on the matter.
Her looks are nowhere near the beauty I see in Rose not only physically but also in terms of attitude and personality it´s no simple feat for a girl to act (sorry for the word) bitchy and still be loved and admired at least in real life. And when I saw some of her acting spoiled in the tráiler I just didn´t like it, it felt really petty even for Rose.
Her overall look is bleh nothing new like one of the other comments said. Someone exotic should of been casted and while some may think it´s not easy to find pretty and talented girls look around Hollywood is overflowing with them! And who said Rose should be some Hollywood bombshell why not just a an undiscovered bombshell. Do you know how many good actresses there are who are not as famous and probably many are beautiful? Neither do I or the industry for that matter.
Anyway I´m just hoping for the best and I will be the first in my close movie theater to watch it.
As a side note my idea of a perfect or almost perfect Rose is none other than..... a younger Mila Kunis but what am I saying even now she could make that role she´s beautiful and seeing how people in their mid thirties are being teenagers nowadays she´s a great option.
No offense to the actress like I said I´m sure she´s great and talented, I just had to get this of my chest with fans of the series who might know how I feel.

I was very disappointed with the casting of Rose. Not to mention the casting of Lissa considering Lucy Fry I can still see as a mermaid since she was on this Netflix series, Mako Mermaids.

Back to Rose...

I don't know exactly who I think should have been chosen as Rose, but when I seen Zoey, immediately I was disappointed! To be honest the whole sense of excitement and anticipation went out the window when I had seen a movie promotion poster deal in the store one day and had hot pink and lime green color scheme. I mean really?! No! I love the Vampire Academy series, and that love reaches out to Bloodlines series as well and I absolutely would hate to see it butchered. So my fingers are crossed and I am hoping to be proven wrong.

i don't know why but i always pictured odette annabelle as rose.

Far out people need to calm their shit! Yeah I'm disappointed with the way the movie is turning out, yeah it seems a lot like mean girls. But this whole shit about "whitewashing" is bs! Have you seen the covers of the books?! She is tanned! Actuallly on the covers she doesn't even look very tanned. It's not a that Zoey Deutch is just "another white girl" it's that rose is tanned/ white. Yeah in the books she is described as "desert princess" but the covers show something else. And btw Richelle Mead was happy with Zoey as rose, proving that they weren't just whitewashing her. So yeah whitewashing is an issue, but in this case I think people need to look at the facts.

I am disappointed with the whole cast and from what i have seen this is mean girls, not vampire academy! i won't let their lousy casting and so called adaption ruin the amazing books for me,terrible casting would never watch this movie!

Looks are not what matters as much, if she can play Rose, that's all that matters. Yes, the looks make a difference a bit but it's not like she is totally white, she's got a little color. And at least she isn't blonde and super tall! She also went through a bunch of training to look more like Rose, maybe she wont be as curvy as in the books but Richelle says she likes Zoey for Rose, so who are we to judge. I hate that people are saying Zoey’s going to be a bad Rose because she has a bubbly personality and seems too giggly. She is an actress for a reason, SHE CAN ACT! If you haven’t seen her act, then watch Ringer. She acts the complete opposite of how she seems in real life. She can pull off Rose. Also other actresses, such as Jennifer Lawrence, acts all bubbly and perky but they have serious characters that they play. Don’t judge Zoey because of that. It makes her more amazing because she can actually act then!

We all knew from the very beginning that we would be a little unsatisfied with whoever they casted as Rose. Us book fans will always find something to critize about the actor. I mean no one can compare to book Rose. Zoey is only human guys...she can't be exactly like the Rose we picture inside our heads. Give her a break.

Oh no! Danila Kozlovskiy is only 6,3! But he's supposed to be playing a 6,7 guy! Whatever will we dooooooo?!

The end is nigh!

:-|

she's currently working out gaining muscle for the role she's working hard so she doesn't disappoint..wait till the movie and lets see how she does.

jesus, she hasn't even acted yet. Let's wait for the movie before we judge how "fit" they are for the role? it's complaining fans like this that ruin the time for all of us

With the whole "she comes off as to sweet" doesn't really mean anything. The best actors and actresses can play the complete opposite of themselves and still be insanely convincing. An example is Neil Patrick Harris. In multiple movies I've seen him in, he plays a man whore, getting with all these different women and just things like that. And in real life he's has a family and is gay. Complete opposite of his TV life.

theres nothing wrong with Zoey Deutch i mean why cant fans just be happy? shes gorgeous and shes a really good actress!! they could have done waaaayyyyy worse, like i legit dont understand? its because she isnt tan enough? thats just really stupid because have ways to make her tanned its not the end of the world! i mean seriously they could have chosen someone like Kristen Stewart or someone even worse! people really need to stop being so judgemental over the choice, and just because she looks sweet doenst mean she is, she's an actress afterall its not like she cant play someone whose is a B..... and Zoey is really curvy and Rose is only 5'6 and Zoey is 5'4 its not the end of the world that shes two inches shorter! and at least shes the right ages, so i think people should wait until the movie or to see the photos of what they look like in character, people need to get over it because they could have done way worse
