“There's a wonderful old Italian joke about a poor man who goes to church every day and prays before the statue of a great saint, begging, "Dear saint-please, please, please...give me the grace to win the lottery." This lament goes on for months. Finally the exasperated staue comes to life, looks down at the begging man and says in weary disgust, "My son-please, please, please...buy a ticket."

Prayer is a realtionship; half the job is mine. If I want transformation, but can't even be bothered to articulate what, exactly, I'm ainming for, how will it ever occur? Half the benefit of prayer is in the asking itself, in the offering of a clearly posed and well-considered intention. “إذ يروي لنا أفلاطون كيف أن بارمنيدس وزينون هجرَا بلدتهما إيليا قاصدَيْن أثينا ابتغاء حضور مهرجان «باناثينا الرياضي العظيم» الذي يُقام كل أربعة أعوام وتكون فيه عروض للموسيقى والشعر والرياضة ويخصَّص لإلهة أثينا. وبينما هما هناك فإذا بهما يلتقيان بسقراط الذي كان صغيرًا آنذاك، فقرأ عليه زينون رسالة كان قد كتبها، فسأله سقراط عن الكتاب ومضمونه، فأجاب زينون بأنه «كتاب يدافع فيه عن بارمنيدس» ضد من يسخرون منه وأنه يرد عليهم فيه مستخدمًا منطقهم نفسه، وختم حديثه بقوله إن الهجوم هو خير وسيلة للدفاع. وكانت عدته في ذلك مجموعة من المفارقات غاية في البراعة والحذاقة في محاولة منه للتشكيك في رؤَى المنطق السليم بتوضيح أن مثل هذه الرؤى قد تقود إلى نتائج غير مقبولة، وكان غرضه من ذلك هو إعلاء شأن بارمنيدس على الأقل بتوضيح أن آراء معارضيه ليست بأفضل منه حالًا. ولنأخذ على سبيل المثال إحدى مفارقات زينون الفاضحة عن الحركة. لنفترض جدلًا أن الحركة ممكِنة فعلًا كما يقول المنطق السليم وعلى عكس ما يرى بارمنيدس، ولنفترض كذلك على سبيل الإيضاح أن العَدَّاء السريع أخيل ينوي أن يشترك في سباق للجري خلال مهرجان باناثينا الرياضي العظيم، ولكن زينون يقول لأخيل إنه قبل أن يصل إلى نقطة النهاية يتعيَّن عليه أولًا أن يمر بمنتصف الطريق، وقبل أن يصل إلى منتصف الطريق لا بُدَّ له أن يقطع مسافة رُبُع الطريق، ولكي يقطع هذه المسافة أيضًا لا بُدَّ له أن يقطع مسافة ثُمُن الطريق، فبدأ القلق ينتاب أخيل لأن عملية التفكير هذه قد تستمر دون نهاية؛ وبذلك أقنعه زينون أنه لا يمكنه أن يقطع أية مسافة على الإطلاق لأن هذا يقتضي منه قطع نصف المسافة ثم رُبُعها ثم ثمنها إلى ما لا نهاية؛ ومن ثَمَّ فلا يمكن للسباق أن يبدأ أبدًا. ويلمح زينون إلى أن هذه هي حالة الارتباك التي تنتاب المرء حين يفكر في الحركة؛ ولذلك انتهى زينون إلى أنه من الأفضل الاعتراف بصحة قول”
