Growing up, Wright had a very hard start to life. His father abandoned him, his younger brother, Alan, and his mother. Facing tough times to keep her family fed properly, Wright's mother had to give up her two boys for adoption hoping to get them back. While at the foster home, Richard had to assimilate with the other children, longing desperately to get home. Several months have passed and Richard's mother finally was able to get her boys back. Wright's mother was able to take of her children, but she had to do it in Jackson, Mississippi. Living in predominately Christian house-hold, Richard had trouble conforming to the house-hold rules. Richard would always get beating because he was would always say the wrong things when in the presence of his grandmother. Richard then learns the way to his families heart, so he always talks about the good of God and how He always saves Richard's life.
Unfortunately, a tragedy has hit Richard's mother becomes extremely ill and he and hid brother are split up and have to live with relatives faraway. Richard had to live with his mother's brother Uncle Clark and he refused to sleep in Clark's dead son's old bedroom , so Richard went back to Jackson, Mississippi to live with his ill mother and Aunt Maggie. Over a period of time Richard's mother begins to get better and Richard takes up a job as a paperboy. Richard starts to see racism first hand when he works with white people because they give his different food than what the white people were eating, and he needed to bare it so he wouldn't loose his job.
When he was 16, a short story of his was published in a southern African-American newspaper. His grandmother and his whole family did not agree with Richard's form of writing because it involved the devil and hell. And his family began to shun him and in his choice of writing. Then Richard decided to leave his family and move to Chicago, where he worked at a post office and also swept streets. But like so many Americans struggling through the Depression poverty settled into his life. Wanting to leave Jackson desperately, Richard began to save money by having multiple jobs and head off to Memphis.
Arriving in Memphis, Richard automatically got a job and a stable place to stay. At his home, they family offered him food and shelter, however, the landlord's daughter Bess took set on Richard. Richard was not sure of what to do because Bess was very informal in terms of how well they known each other. Even though Bess was Richard's age she was behind on her school work and read at a fifth grade level. Bess is too worried about finding a husband rather than getting her school work together ...more "
