"I am ...so confused as to who this book is for? The tone and the extremely basic level of content seems like it might be an introductory type text for teens....but then she talks about corporate retreats? Very superficial in some ways (she loves personality tests! 🙄) and the tone feels very much "trying hard to be cool" but so far the actual advice has been reasonable to interesting. Very all over the place." Oct 13, 2023 09:54PM

“You can be funny and kind or funny and cruel. The second one is easier, but the first one is worth it.”

Erin Morgenstern
“Spiritual but not religious,” Zachary clarifies. He doesn’t say what he is thinking, which is that his church is held-breath story listening and late-night-concert ear-ringing rapture and perfect-boss fight-button pressing. That his religion is buried in the silence of freshly fallen snow, in a carefully crafted cocktail, in between the pages of a book somewhere after the beginning but before the ending. He”

Tressie McMillan Cottom
“They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that ugly is as ugly does. Both are lies. Ugly is everything done to you in the name of beauty. Knowing the difference is part of getting free.”
Tressie McMillan Cottom, Thick: And Other Essays

Alex S. Vitale
“Well-trained police following proper procedure are still going to be arresting people for mostly low-level offenses, and the burden will continue to fall primarily on communities of color because that is how the system is designed to operate—not because of the biases or misunderstandings of officers.”
Alex S. Vitale, The End of Policing

“It is insufficient to only tell your children that racism and racists are bad. It is insufficient to simply explain “We love people of all colors.” It is lazy and near damaging to proclaim a love for all people but never make the leap of actually reaching out to people of color or adding tangible diversity to your life. In a world filled with empty rhetoric, our children don’t need to hear words from us without action.
They need to see us embody the beliefs we claim to hold dear.”
Bellamy Shoffner
