Book cover for The Naked Lady Who Stood on Her Head: A Psychiatrist’s Stories of His Most Bizarre Cases
Intellectualization is different from another common defense mechanism, denial, wherein we refuse to even acknowledge the existence of the problem or event. Intellectualization gives the impression that one is dealing with an issue, but the ...more

John Green
“At the end of his life, the great picture book author and illustrator Maurice Sendak said on the NPR show Fresh Air, 'I cry a lot because I miss people. I cry a lot because they die, and I can't stop them. They leave me, and I love them more.'

He said, 'I'm finding out as I'm aging that I'm in love with the world.'

It has taken me all my life up to now to fall in love with the world, but I've started to feel it the last couple of years. To fall in love with the world isn't to ignore or overlook suffering, both human and otherwise. For me anyway, to fall in love with the world is to look up at the night sky and feel your mind swim before the beauty and the distance of the stars. It is to hold your children while they cry, to watch as the sycamore trees leaf out in June. When my breastbone starts to hurt, and my throat tightens, and tears well in my eyes, I want to look away from the feeling. I want to deflect with irony, or anything else that will keep me from feeling directly. We all know how loving ends. But I want to fall in love with the world anyway, to let it crack me open. I want to feel what there is to feel while I am here.”
John Green, The Anthropocene Reviewed: Essays on a Human-Centered Planet

Amal El-Mohtar
“There’s a kind of time travel in letters, isn’t there? I imagine you laughing at my small joke; I imagine you groaning; I imagine you throwing my words away. Do I have you still? Do I address empty air and the flies that will eat this carcass? You could leave me for five years, you could return never—and I have to write the rest of this not knowing.”
Amal El-Mohtar, This Is How You Lose the Time War

Robert Guffey
“Indeed, Christians often confuse hermeticism with Satanism. They confuse esotericism with Satanism. They confuse Freemasonry with Satanism. They confuse spirituality with Satanism. They confuse Mormonism with Satanism. They confuse Dungeons & Dragons and Proctor & Gamble and Mightly Mouse and comic books and pop music and cocaine with Satanism.”
Robert Guffey, Operation Mindfuck

Amal El-Mohtar
“I want to be a body for you. I want to chase you, find you, I want to be eluded and teased and adored; I want to be defeated and victorious—I want you to cut me, sharpen me. I want to drink tea beside you in ten years or a thousand. Flowers grow far away on a planet they’ll call Cephalus, and these flowers bloom once a century, when the living star and its black-hole binary enter conjunction.I want to fix you a bouquet of them, gathered across eight hundred thousand years, so you can draw our whole engagement in a single breath, all the ages we’ve shaped together.”
Amal El-Mohtar, This Is How You Lose the Time War

Ibram X. Kendi
“Black people are apparently responsible for calming the fears of violent cops in the way women are supposedly responsible for calming the sexual desires of male rapists.”
Ibram X. Kendi, How to Be an Antiracist
