"This is a learning project read that I share with other writers, so I am doing something new. I am line editing with comments to share, and it will be daily until I finish. chapter 1 is very good. I felt it lacked interiority which is difficult to do in present tense but not impossible. But I really loved the opening. What she faced in Chap 2 was more characters. Perhaps more telling than showing wld be better." — Jul 28, 2026 12:48PM

But whether it’s tending one’s garden or one’s cause, one’s relationships or one’s reputation, one’s immortal soul or one’s net worth, these mattering projects become the loci of some of our deepest emotions.”

― Grow Together: 50 Planting Partnerships to Boost Your Harvests
“What the mattering instinct is about is trying to prove to ourselves that we are deserving of all the attention that we can’t help paying ourselves. And what better proof can there be for concluding that we are deserving of our own attention than the attention others pay to us—which in the case of the famous is a great deal.”

“Schopenhauer, philosophy’s reigning pessimist, wrote, “Every possession and every happiness is but lent by chance for an uncertain time, and may therefore be demanded back the next hour.”
