“পুবে সবে আলো ফুটেছে। পূবের পাহাড়টার জন্যে আলো পৌঁছতে একটু দেরি হয় উপত্যকাতে। আলো এসে পৌঁছতেই ভোঁর ঘাসের মাঠের উপর রাতভর জমা শিশিরে লক্ষ লক্ষ হীরে ঝিকমিক করে। লাল সাদা ফুল এসেছে ঘাসগুলোতে। ঘাসের মাঠের আঁচল ঘিরে ধরা বা চোরকাঁটার বর্ডার। তারপরই গহীন জঙ্গল।

চারদিকে সাজা, শাল, ধাওয়া, বহে, কাসসী কুহমী, বেল, চাঁর, জামুন, পলাশ ইত্যাদি নানা গাছগাছালি। শালই বেশি। সোজা, সবুজের পতাকার মতো উঠে গেছে নীল অকলঙ্ক আকাশে। সাজা গাছের আর এক নাম সাজ। গোঁদ-বায়গারা পুজো করে ওই গাছ। শালকে, যেমন করে ওঁরাও-সাঁওতালরা। ধাওয়া হচ্ছে গদ-এর গাছ। আঠা হয় এ গাছ থেকে। বহেড়া গাছগুলো বিরাট বিরাট। শখ করে খায় হরিণ ওদের ফল। কাসসী গাছের কদর গরুর গাড়ির চাকা বানাতে। বড় শক্ত কাঠ এ। কুহমি অনেকটা বেলের মতো। চাঁর গাছও মস্ত মস্ত হয়। চমৎকার ছায়া দেয় এ গাছ। চিরাঞ্জীদানাও বলে, অনেকে এর ফলকে। ফুল ফোটে সাদা সাদা মিষ্টি গন্ধর, ফাল্গুন চৈত্রে। চার-এর ফল ধরে বৈশাখের শেষে বা জ্যৈষ্ঠেতে। মিষ্টি ফল। জামুনও, বড় ও ছোট অনেক আছে হাটচান্দ্রার আশে পাশের জঙ্গলে। গরমের শেষে আষাঢ় শ্রাবণে পাকে। পলাশ। পলাশ গাছে গাছে গরমের শুরুতে ফুল যেমন লালে লাল করে দেয় দিগন্ত, তেমন সে গাছের গুটি পোকা থেকেই লাক্ষা সংগ্রহ করে আদিবাসী ছেলেমেয়েরা। কারখানায় নিয়ে যায়। মেটিরিয়াল ম্যানেজার শর্মা পা ছড়িয়ে বসে সওদা করতে করতে অনেক কিছু দেখে। কোকিলের মতো কালো ও মধুরকণ্ঠী মেয়েগুলো জানে যে, শমার চোখ দুটি অসভ্য। ওরা এও জানে যে, বেশির ভাগ পুরুষের চোখই অসভ্য।”
