He had occasion to recommend a whole cluster of software architecture books, and at the top of his list was "Domain Modeling Made Functional" (DMMF). He even said that his favorite programming language might be F# after having been introduced to it from the book. I ended up reading a bunch of Domain-Driven Design (DDD) books other than DMMF, but put it on a wishlist with the intention to maybe get to it and eventually was given it, which was very nice and made it so I eventually did get to it.

I think this is probably now my first choice to introduce DDD to working programmers, even if they are not coding in F#. It's very simple, but that simplicity is not a fault, but illustrative of the simplicity one could achieve with attention.

Other books have brought up DDD concepts, but this book brought on a whole mess of realizations for me. I had seen Event Storming and domain decomposition, but once he talked about "distributed monoliths", I realized that inconsistent decomposition explained so many problems I had seen before. Implementing aggregates through functions showed that aggregates are not just a matter of delegating consistency to an object, but resolving the scope of change consistently across structures being transformed. The "error handling as separate track of execution" showed functional transformations creating new paths for clear flow.

Honestly, probably the best place for this book is as an optional choice for a programming languages class introducing functional programming, so that people can see its approaches are immediately applicable to commonplace problems.

I'm not entirely sure one can get all the insights from this book, or whether they crystalize other reading, showing them in a new light. It's a chance I'd be willing to inflict, and so recommend this book. ...more "
