bit of a shame that the mystery is so obvious. i’m 100% certain that my guess from chapter 2 is exactly where things are headed, but a familiar story done well is still a good time and this has been done *very* well so far.

my guess with all the mentions of “siphoning” and light motifs that the blight is human made and sucks life out of everything around the city to power it, or something like that. it’s going to be some kind of capitalist parasite allegory.

dnf’d the first book, i could tell it was not going to improve. caricanread said the second is better, has funny characters and that it has no plot to speak of, which is rly for the best because what i read in the first one was so badly done. no world building is better than shit world building. this is my last attempt with miss hazelwood!!

i mean, this is super readable. it reads pretty much like a very mid work of fanfiction with corny dialogue and tons of logical inconsistencies, but without being forgiven by characters from the canon work that you already know and love. the characters here have no personalities. they’re plastic dolls in a house of tropes and it makes the author’s fanfic background rly obvious.

the vampire lore in this is so bad i almost can’t do this. ik this book isn’t meant to be read for its world building but it should at least make basic sense??? the vampires in this are effectively giant pandas. weak, useless, able to eat only one thing and shit at reproducing. why would you choose to write them like this?? to make the heroine particularly feeble against the big bad alpha lol?

i just want to be one of the girls but i’m already annoyed. the vampire heroine convinced her human office job that she can only come in at night, but the place is full of coworkers while she’s there. the author literally forgot that she can’t come during regular hours?? she’s also impressed that a vampire woman didn’t age in 17 years like… why would that surprise you, you are literally a vampire too.

so relatable that rilke begins every letter apologizing profusely and giving excuses for why it took him so long to reply. early twentieth century version of "omg i saw ur text and meant to reply but then i forgot about it mb ):"

a hundred and some years later, this reads as if i'm being personally given career/life advice by an austrian poet. this is writing that reaches across the span of time.

rilke: i can't criticize your poems because works of art are unknowable mysteries and criticism just leads to misunderstandings
rilke: anyways

lol and of course now we're back with the classic fable of Woman Reports Willing Away Stage 4 Cancer with Good Vibes. do medical miracles happen? sure. but we cannot be irresponsibly pushing the steve jobs holistic diet and wellness plan as a possible cure for cancer ffs.

idk what the last section was but the part on capitalist exploitation and structural racism is excellent. especially appreciate the focus on violations of indigenous rights in canada.

this section on adhd is bonkers. i guess i have it because my parents fought and almost divorced when i was 10, and my dad has it because of chinese communism lmao. this book has gotten progressively more and more strange. at this point i'm reading just to see what unsubstantiated claim is made next.
