Hey everyone, I have moved over to the app story graph because it feels a little less like a social media and more for serious analytics and good reccomendations generated not for the purpose of selling things on amazon. I hope some of yall join me, no pressure!

This book is really pragmatic as well as visionary and idealistic. She can give a lot of shiz to basically every titan urban planner... can she offer a good market based alternative?

Listened to Pauline’s story. There are so many parallel’s to Pecola’s, and while it was an obvious literary choice, it works. There is colorism, abuse, and reckoning with the ideal world versus imagined escape to a (both times problematic) ideal.

Fitting SO NICELY with my environmental justice class. First chapter brilliantly shows the fear and well of emotions at being outdoors. This really compliments “Black Faces White Spaces” and all I’ve learned from black environmentalists recently. And of course what I’ve been learning about property and OWNING a house / American dreaming

So much capital! Monetary, human, social. Everything is commodified by Glasser! Unions and higher taxes push businesses out and are ultimately worse?? For poor people. Will have to keep trying to see the logic in his arguments🙈

Not as profound as the Republic but the logical rigor here is very impressive. The best regime is not findable, aristocracy, and a mix of polities. Brilliant! And confusing? Onto book 7 and 8 where democracy is proven worse than aristocracy.

"While a college student is reading Adam Smith...he runs his father in debt irretrievable" We are critiquing it a lot in class but oh boy is it so rich. Heres another one: "The things which the student most wants...the far more valuable education...is by associating with the most cultivated of contemporaries." So true! We are REALLY paying for connections here not the tuition. 1840's critique still applicable.

In Herzl's Altneuland, the fiction vision of Israel has two men running for leader. Geyer is a modern right wing Greater Israel Zionist who wants only Jews to vote, etc. Littwak is the egalitarian, liberal democrat who ends up winning. Beinart starts this book with a really good metaphor. The creation of the state of Israel definitely started with a Littwak in office; post 1967 it is increasingly Geyer. strong start

Love is his tyrant, and lives lordly in him and lawlessly, and being himself a king, leads him on, as a tyrant leads a State, to the performance of any reckless deed by which he can maintain himself and the rabble of his associates, whether those whom evil communications have brought in from without, or those whom he himself has allowed to break loose within him by reason of a similar evil nature in himself.
