Circe
A spellbinding and remarkable book. Madeleine Miller's writing is excellent as well as her attention to detail. The Greek Myths are indeed being portrayed exquisitely. I haven't enjoyed a book so much for a long time. Circe - my!

The Price of Genius: A Life of Pauline Viardot
What an absolutely spellbinding and fabulous biography of Pauline Viardot, a leading nineteenth-century French mezzo-soprano, pedagogue and composer of Spanish descent. Her friendships included George Sand, Chopin, Alfred de Musset and Turgenev. The latter both loving her in their own ways.

What a fabulous book on the meaning of life and everything that is hidden within us, which miraculously comes to the fore. A book that has allowed me to finally discover myself. We constantly go through trips in our lifetimes, many a waste of time but when that very unusual wonderful experience enters, it must be grabbed!

The Warden (Chronicles of Barsetshire, #1)
What an exquisitely written book with a perfect mastership of the English language. I'm slowly beginning to enjoy the personality of the Rev. Septimus Harding. One of those books that has to be savoured slowly to truly appreciate it.

Shooting an Elephant
There are twenty-three essays here and I have read thirteen so far. They are all excellent. Why I left this book hanging around on my shelves collecting dust for three years is beyond me. I must check my other unread books out!
Orwell's style is quite frankly inimitable.

I read this book four years ago and now my Book Group has decided they want to read it and so that should prove interesting.

The Wilder Shores of Love
I'm reading the most thrilling of books at the the moment (one of my father's books) The Wilder Shores of Love. Briefly, written in 1954 it is about four women in the 19th century (two Victorian, one French and one Russian) who decide to break out of their backgrounds and turn to the East for adventurous lives and loves! It's such an exotic book!

This is actually, well to me anyway, a very frightening book. Normally I'm very keen to turn the page but it is the exact opposite here. I'm nervous to turn the page as I don't know what I'm going to read next. I've never read a book before that has this very odd effect on it. I feel as though I'm sitting within a dream, trying to escape and unable to achieve that. Doris Lessing loved this book so I keep on telling..

Growth of the Soil
This is an absolutely fabulous book, split into two books, 1 and 2, depressing-brilliance in fact but I've just become so absorbed in the life of Isak who literally goes into the wilderness and finds land to live and work on - it doesn't occur to him that he needs to purchase the land - then he needs a woman, Inger turns up with a hairlip, children follow... I'm just coming to the end of book 1. What a thought ...,

With ease and yet élan I slipped into the sheets with Henry Miller and began reading this fascinating period of his life in Big Sur, California. Not only does he have a superb writing style but he’s a remarkable raconteur. I haven’t been so taken with a book for quite

Julian Barnes has me enthralled with his writing style and Théodore Géricault is indeed a fascinating artist.

Between the Acts
I'm a great lover of Virginia Woolf's "Letters" - 6 volumes and her "Diaries" - 5 volumes. I take a great delight in browsing through them from time to time. But this novel - why on earth did her husband Leonard allow it to be published? Woolf said she was not happy with it before her death. Why were her wishes not respected? So far I find the work extremely childish and boring. Sad... what a damned shame.

Roger Casement : The Biography of a Patriot Who Lived for England, Died for Ireland
This biography has been languishing on one of my book shelves for several months now. Pre-goodreads I loved biographies and so perhaps it's right to delve into this work now.

Who said "small is beautiful"? Well whoever, did this is a typical example of that statement. What an exquisite book!
“We shan’t go to the wood today, the laurels have been cut! That fair maid has gathered them all. Join in the dance, see how we dance! Skip and dance, and kiss whomever you wish!”
