The style is an acquired taste. Still not sure I’m there yet, but the prose is considerably better. The opening scene is very atmospheric and cinematic

Volume one down. I could nitpick the writing all day, the man really could have used an empowered editor. But there’s something to be said for the unique lore and world building. There’s a latent talent for atmosphere that’s slowly carving itself out of the marble.

The prose is… well, the translator did their best I’m sure. In spite of the writing itself, the world and the lore has me pretty hooked so far. It’s a thick book, but not too dense. A pretty easy read.

I’ve never been a huge King guy, but I came across some audiobooks made of his early work, and the controversy around Rage made me too curious to check out. So far, you can get a sense of where it’s going, the point it’s making, etc. It might come on pretty strong and be a bit predictable, but considering King started this as a teenager, it’s not too bad so far. It’s quickly engaging if nothing else.

For the first time in a long time, I’m burdened with the disappointment that I’ll never experience journeying with these characters for the first time again.

This gets uncomfortably gross. Not uncomfortable in a way that makes you think about the message, but in a way that makes you think Burroughs is better off that he didn’t live in the modern internet age. I’m just finishing to say I did at this point.

A charismatic, loud mouthed ignoramus with a dogmatic belief in his own supposed genius rides a wave of propaganda and false populism into a seat of power. Over time, he surrounds himself more and more with sycophants and cowardly yes men, builds concentration camps, starts ill advised military conflicts and stalls his own economy, causing ramifications that last generations.
I’m glad no one will ever repeat this
