Decided to revisit this after all those years in secondary. I have a slight recall of what happened but already from the first chapter I feel spirited.

Honestly the character I feel the most for is Hareton. The lad is seeking scraps of affection and only earns abuse.

I feel like there mustn’t be someone as lonely as him in the moors. No wonder he enjoys tending to the animals; they are his own kind.

Thank you Edgar you finally did one standing thing in your life—even if it was at your deathbed.

Honestly asking—does Heathcliff have no life? How is he orchestrating LETTERS to the cousin of his son. This is so creepy, honestly I wanted to keep my tongue clean when discussing this book but he’s just showing himself to be a miserable lowlife.

I genuinely don’t understand what he’s getting out of such meddling? Does this man not feel exhausted by himself?

Heathcliff you poor, miserly bastard—it wasn’t enough for you to realise your abuse from your tormentor; but instead you choose to reenact the same triangulation between your own son and the one you made little more of a slave? For what? Vindication? Amusement?

His cruelty is exhausting now, it’s not interesting. I would ask him to grow up but this is beyond his comprehension.

Truly a miserable man.

For a minute I believed Catherine was feeling remorse for her ways as death was confirmed for her, but no—she was just as insufferable or even more at death’s door. It interests me that Heathcliff is aware of her wickedness and fault yet still calls her upon him.
She was unbearable and now I believe Heathcliff will become more in her stead.
How dismal.

Oh Heathcliff…As you rebuke your wife you married solely for the single minded purpose of tormenting her, all I could think of was how ironic it was for you to be calling her disgraceful, abject, and everything more—whilst being completely blind of how everything he accused her of perfectly maps on to himself.

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

I can see where the hate for Heathcliff comes from. Isabella doesn’t deserve this. The poor woman. To think she’ll suffer for what Catherine genuinely called upon herself.

The more I read this book, the more insufferable Catherine is becoming to me. The way she speaks about Edgar is so ungrateful, she married him for his wealth to supply her vices, yet she has the audacity to call him unwanted and unworthy and whatnot. And then has the audacity to deny any accountability for the drama and consequences SHE INSTIGATED.

I know she’s going to die and honestly I’m just waiting for it.

Honestly with how far I’ve gotten into this book there’s a just two main questions I’ve got circling my head. Them being: Where the hell did Heathcliff go for 3 years??? Also why the hell does everyone just flounder against Catherine’s whims? She’s insufferable and I don’t understand why no one has the mind to opt out of her nonsense.

The story of Heathcliff’s introduction makes me perplexed. I wonder why Mr Earnshaw chose someone he considered a ‘thing’ to be his favourite. It feels like an oxymoron. Heathcliff hadn’t even been thought of as a person to begin with but he roused the most importance in Mr Earnshaw beyond his own children. Was this due to religion or some deeper family matter?

Starting to make more sense of things, the fever dream that Mr Lockwood had was particularly interesting and how it could link to said Catherine. 490 sins that were being lectured on. And i was surprised to see Heathcliff show such intense emotion, his grief for Catherine is stark!

And Catherine had 3 possible names so one has to be the birth name and the others…marriages? Perhaps potentials or not.

I am rather confused by the characterisation of the characters. Sometimes so much is said I can’t tell who is saying what. And also—Heathcliff just seems rather strange. Unpleasant even. I don’t get why he would allow his tenant to be treated like this, I hope it’s explained.

I’m glad Zillah atleast had some sense of compassion towards Mr Lockwood.

I've just started this book and it's a bit difficult to grasp as the vocabulary used is beyond my comprehension at times. I'm finding it difficult to make a coherent image in my head with things so l need to look up things which break my flow reading.

But—for the most part what I understood of the first chapter is Heathcliff is being introduced via his tenant and he is being characterised as a 'refined' anomaly.

Starting the story and we’re introduced to Raskolnikov and his intrusive thoughts. Though it’s not being laid out plainly, you can tell what he’s thinking (and I know this is a ‘why done it too’ but I’m wondering is poverty all that is driving him towards something so grave? There’s multiple others in the same situation yet it makes you wonder why must the idea be so seductive to Raskolnikov?

Starting the Katz translation and already gripped by the foreword. This has never happened to me before. The themes to be explored and the allowance for interpretation really makes me excited to get through this. The mystery being something completely different to usual murder stories. The writing serves as an inspiration.

I’ve finished the last chapter, the end was rather anticlimactic actually. He died before seeing Paru, yet another promise he couldn’t keep. And she couldn’t see him either. I felt he was truly unravelling, but I don’t wholly sympathise with him either.
Before I post my review, I’ll be freshly watching the SLB film adaptation of Devdas to see how greatly they differ. The tones are entirely distinct!

Chandramukhi and Devdas have another meeting. I am surprised she left her simple life to go back to what she did. But she wanted to meet Devdas that terribly. His behaviour, I have a split mind about it. Whilst it feels he is being selfish and taking what he can, I think also he’s giving her the wish she wanted, one goodness amongst all the sin he has accumulated in his grief. One chapter left, his end is near..

The story is coming to its tragedy. Even after so long, Paru still holds Devdas in her heart. And he’s becoming undone in his realisation of all he’s lost. Monoroma’s letter mentions how death seems to be upon him, so I believe his drinking habits will lead to his demise. Does he really just blow that much money on wine? It is astounding! I loved Chandramukhi’s speech too. It was absolutely moving and true!

Okay I’m starting to understand the appeal of the story. Devdas’s love is late and now he has to suffer the consequences. Whilst I don’t sympathise with what he did beforehand, I do truly think he held feelings for Paru but something got in front of him. He notices his wrong but that’s not enough. He can’t just confess his mistake and think that will be able to turn back time..

Paru is settling well into her new family, however Devdas is spiralling. I was surprised to see Chandramukhi fell in love with him so quickly, but I think the notion that he came and paid her without taking her dignity moved her. He didn’t talk to her lowly like most men would have. But he doesn’t want her love because he sees himself wrong for it. It’s clear he’s grieving his mistake, but is this truly it?

Okay…Wow Devdas has issues. I really can’t understand how his mind works. He rejected Paru and now that he’s regretting it, he lashes out at her? He thinks power will give him what he wants. Yet if that’s his philosophy, why does he become so lame to fate? You’d think he’d fight it more if he was so devil willed. But he just throws tantrums and sulks, unable to make sense of his emotions or grief.

Paru knows her emotions but Devdas seems to go where the wind sways. He seems to not have footing of his own despite how unrestrained he was in his youth. It makes me wonder, is the way he is the effect of being in Kolkata and his studies or is he just a cowardly person? Is his bravado an act or was it an attempt?
The chapter ends giving some insight on Devdas’s character, but why is he so complicit in his own ruin

The book is definitely different to what i imagined. I get the vibe between Devdas and Paru given they’re children and he seems pretty temperamental and care free but i wonder how the love story roots from this and why Paru loves him the way she does.

There’s something so eerie about how this is written. It’s not dramatic at all. It’s almost mundane. The voice is just narrating not living. And somehow that adds to it. I don’t know if that was intentional or not by Senécal but it makes the story all the more harrowing.

There’s no mystery about Bruno’s intentions. I didn’t expect it to be put out in the open like that. The focus is on his devolution
